League Of Extraordinary Gentleman reboot will be "female-centric"

Word on 20th Century Fox's reboot of The League of Extraordinary Gentleman has ramped up after its announcement in May, with producer John Davis describing the film as "female-centric."

"Just by going back to the roots and making it authentic to what the fan base was really excited about," he told Collider. "It's female-centric, which I think is interesting. I love female characters, point-of-view characters in action movies."

Initial response to this new adaptation of Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's seminal comic was somewhat mixed; mainly because the last effort was so disastrous. The 2003 big screen jaunt starred Sean Connery - in one of his last roles - as part of a crew of Victorian-era literary figures who unite to save the world.

"I thought Mad Max was great, said Davis. "I think you can always find a fresh way of doing something and going back to the basics. What is that people love? What is it that made them love the property in the first place?... You can't save the world with conventional people when unconventional things are happening."

A female-centric take from a producer who cites Mad Max: Fury Road? This spin on The League of Extraordinary Gentleman is starting to intrigue, though it also clashes with a commonly known fact about the League itself: there's only one woman involved, and that's Mina Murray from Dracula. Perhaps Davis and the film's eventual director will mine other Victorian tomes – or simply invent new characters – to fulfil their new vision.
