L.A. Noire: See the ground-breaking technology behind the game

A few weeks ago we told you about the MotionScan system that's making Rockstar's detective 'em-up, L.A. Noire, look so amazing. Back then we really wanted to emphasise just how revolutionary the system is that allows these incredibly detailed faces but it would've taken thousands of words or at least three years worth of trying to draw it with crayons. Thankfully, Rockstar have just released this behind the scenes trailer for your viewing pleasure.

So without further ado, let's take a look at how the new benchmark in gaming visuals can be achieved...

Impressive, no? Of course it is. We predict a clambering for this technology from all and sundry. We're hopeful Rockstar will use it in GTAV, which, lets be honest, would be bloody brilliant. For now though, we're more than excited at the prospect of getting hands-on with L.A. Noire and hopefully we'll have more on it soon.

Imagine if Valve used this tech. Imagine the possibilities!

I am so glad that my computer has HD. That technology is amazing. I can't wait to play this game. The only think I'm worried about is the fact that I suck at reading people. Completely inept at it. ReCaptcha: Geographic hosann

I haven't really paid much attention to this game before now thinking it was going to be like Mafia 2, but, after watching this it is now a must buy! Definitely my kind of game!

WOW! this is the future. You could actually have big actors starring in a game and it wouldn't just be their voice, it would be them! Plus Walter Bishop from fringe is in this game! and a guy from mad men

@BlindMarksman: They are definitely up among the top. Rockstars ballsy, and it's proven to be good for them. I can't wait for this game.

    John Noble. Nuff said.

wow that's pretty awesome! there's one thing that's bugging me tho. The faces are waaaayyyy more detailed than everything else, which makes it look wierd. Also you can kind of tell that the faces have been animtaed using different software, then 'stuck' on the character models' heads. Still early days tho so that may improve...

This just looks amazing. If it is as nuanced as it seems (for gameplay), this will be the real evolution for gaming, not that pile that is Mass Effect.

Freaking amazing! This is the first time i see such an improvement on faces after Halflife 2!
  • BlindMarksman - December 16, 2010 8:18 p.m.

AMAZING! SERIOUSLY AMAZING! GTA IV, RED DEAD REDEMPTION AND NOW THIS! ROCKSTAR IS SLOWLY (BY THAT I MEAN QUICKLY) BECOMING ONE OF THE GREATEST GAME DEVELOPERS OF OUR TIME!!!

That's a pretty big step forward and looks amazing. There is a break in the "suspension of disbelief," however, in the animation when heads tilt and the difference of texture quality at the neck, like Kaizo616 had said. When the head tilts there's a certain stiffness in the animation -- like the motion capture of the body doesn't quite match the motion capture of the face. It looks cool and pushes forward the complexity and believability of animation; it just needs more use to smooth out that disparity in the future. Awesome video, though!

Really excited for this, especially after seeing that vid. Amazing face capture, just stunning. But like Kaizo616 said, something's not right. I think it may be that the rest of the character models don't appear up to the same standard as the faces, which makes them stand out a bit too much. Hopefully it will all come good in the end.

Wait one moment please.... I need to pick up my jaw because it just hit the floor.
  • ventanger - December 16, 2010 7:17 p.m.

BigKingBud is a turd. Mass Effect was always set up to be a trilogy you stupid asshat. Anyways, this facial animation is astonishing. Kicks Heveh Rayen in the ballsacks.
  • Felixthecat - December 16, 2010 6:34 p.m.

Fuck Mass Effect 3, L.A. Noire is where it's at.
  • NanoElite666 - December 16, 2010 6:11 p.m.

So I was skeptical about how well the facial animation in this game looked up until now, having heard that it was amazing but never having seen it... HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIT That is some of the downright most impressive facial animation I've ever seen in a game.
  • AlmightyFuzz - December 16, 2010 5:48 p.m.

Holy f&$* that's amazing! Really looking forward to this game :D
