L.A. Noire five-star walkthrough and newspaper guide

Arson Case 5: A Different Kind of War

Newspaper 12 • Investigation: Nuclear Bug & Rodent Control • Investigation: Westlake Pest Control • Investigation: Dr. Fontaine's Surgery • Newspaper 13 • Investigation: Rancho Rincon Bunkhouse • The final chase

Newspaper 12

Start by heading out to Rapid Exterminators. You won't get anything useful out of the clerk, but look on the counter for the second-to-last newspaper.

Investigation: Nuclear Bug & Rodent Control

Just for the sake of completeness, head to Nuclear and talk to the clerk for another dead end.

Investigation: Westlake Pest Control

Finally, visit Westlake Pest Control, and you'll get an address for your arson suspect.

Investigation: Dr. Fontaine's Surgery

On your way through the surgery, keep an eye out for this cupboard just outside the office proper.

Open it, and you'll find what appears to be the remaining stash of Army-issue morphine.

Next, head into the office and check the body.

Start by examining Fontaine's head to see the injuries caused by his patient.

Next, check his left hand for a lighter with the initials "I.H."

Once you're done pawing at the doctor, look at the floor over by his bookshelf.

There, you'll find a crystal ball. Rotate it to get a good look at the splotch of blood.

Put the crystal ball down and head over to the table by the door, where you'll find a case folder.

Start out by tapping on Leland and Dr. Fontaine's names on the note at the front of the file.

Then, turn the page and tap on the Sawyer name, conveniently circled in red.

Finally, flip to the back of the report and read the psychiatric evaluation of the arson suspect.

Next, turn your attention to Dr. Fontaine's desk, where you'll find a map sitting on a large sketchpad.

Move the map and use the charcoal pencil next to the sketchpad to reveal a hidden drawing.

Next, grab the newspaper next to the sketchpad and superimpose the drawing you just made over it to reveal a clue.

Then, do the same with the map.

Newspaper 13

Before you leave the office, check the edge of Fontaine's desk for the next - and final - newspaper.

Investigation: Rancho Rincon Bunkhouse

After letting yourself in through the front door, check the workbench along the entry hall for a military-issue flamethrower.

Next, head into the room with all the origami cranes, and examine the map on the wall.

Next, look to the right on the workbench, and examine the crane you find there.

After that, turn around and look on the corner of this table for a folded square of paper that, when unfolded, reveals another Elysian Fields vacation flyer.

Finally, check the photo on the wall by the door for one last clue.

The final chase

Since you won't actually be graded at the end of this case, feel free to cause as much damage as possible, even though most of it will inevitably be to your (easily wrecked) pursuers. Keep up with Kelso and make it to the river, and the chase will be over.

After that, there's just more long action sequence between you and the finale, which shouldn't be too difficult so long as you can keep from getting shot to pieces. Blast your way through it (making sure to try out the flamethrower you'll find in the service tunnels along the way), and enjoy the ending.

L.A. Noire review
Why do they always run?

  • FVDub - May 23, 2011 7:25 p.m.

Once again, this is an incredible guide GR. Mike you should be getting a raise for all the work you've done with the L.A. Noire stuff.
  • FVDub - May 23, 2011 7:28 p.m.

Mikel, not Mike! Give this man a raise.
  • profile0000 - May 23, 2011 7:35 p.m.

I will certainly be using this for my 2nd playthrough of the game. Thanks for the hard work Mikel!
  • Mexicutioner - May 23, 2011 7:51 p.m.

Very nice guide! I have to say though, missing all of the newspapers is kinda hard to do, unless you just blast through the game that is....
  • WonsAuto - May 23, 2011 7:55 p.m.

Excellent as always. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Mikel makes the best open-world guides, accept no substitutes.
  • McSpermie - May 23, 2011 10:20 p.m.

Very bueno guide, I was curious I have done everything besides finding cars... Would it be possible for you guys to make one for vehicles? I would greatly appreciate it.
  • IntimidatingStair - May 23, 2011 11:38 p.m.

Awesome guide, will be coming back to this page for a while to see what i did wrong in each case once I've tried everything on my own.
  • philipshaw - May 24, 2011 12:05 p.m.

I will need this on my 2nd playthorugh of the game, getting 3 or 4 stars on most cases
  • metalheadmax - May 24, 2011 12:43 p.m.

Great guide! (as always) once i've finished my first play through (on Vice at the moment) i'll go back and use this guide i've only 5 starred 3 cases so far and gotten 4 and 3 on the rest (except one which i got 2 stars on ): one thing I love about this game is that you nail some cases and not others, it feels realistic and gives great replay value one thing that has given me a lower rating on one or two cases is a few conversation and clue glitches which hopefully will be patched soon so I replay them properly :) Still L.A. Noire is definitely one of my favourite games of all time!
  • robertchen - May 24, 2011 4:42 p.m.

L.A. Noire is awesome so far! I just found a blog that's giving out the DLC for all the extra cases! I just got my Slip Of The Tongue Case DLC, but I don't know if there's anymore DLC codes left. If you want to check it out, here's the site:
  • Burdmayn - May 24, 2011 10:16 p.m.

This is a great guide, but why isn't it front page? I had to search for and bookmark it for future use. This helped me up to the "Silk Stocking Murder" and then the case got kind of weird? I wasn't given the option to call KGPL when the guide says to do so, and fresh picked guy wasn't at the back of the bar when I went...
  • DelusionalKing - May 26, 2011 2:18 a.m.

After solving this case it said in case notes "Another visit to rays cafe & you would have seen what leroy was prepared to do to avoid jail" dose this mean you could have gone to rays cafe instead of the Patterson residince for a differnt ending?
  • Polarzombies - May 29, 2011 2:26 a.m.

Thank you Mikel Reparaz for an excellent L.A Noire guide.
  • Eaxis - May 29, 2011 1:12 p.m.

This is such comprehensive and detailed guide. Thanks mikel.
  • shockle - May 29, 2011 9:35 p.m.

Im not sure about the rest of the guide but for the white shoe slaying case, this guide does not give you the right info to get 5 stars, so why id called a 5 star guide? it tells you to go the hobo den last which i did, then in the case notes at the end i got 4 stars and it said "An early visit to the hobo camp could of offered a lead, but good luck finding a coherant witness" It should be called a 4 star guide because thats what it offers.
  • shockle - May 29, 2011 11:17 p.m.

Still its clear the maker has put alot of effort in and i feel i may of been a bit harsh all the clues and correct questions are all present and correct here, so thanks for all the hard work on this.
  • EvidentDead - May 30, 2011 11:54 a.m.

I have used this guide for every single case (after beating the game, of course) and recieved all 5 stars (including the Hobo case) Thats very strange that you did not get all 5 stars... As someone who knos how long this game is, I hope you figure out what happened. Anyways, I thought this guide was great. Thank you very much Mr. Reparaz!
  • MyNameIsMyName - May 30, 2011 5:09 p.m.

On penultimate case in the arson desk and I've been running on fumes since Vice but it's been a good experience through and through kinda weird that I maxed out my level with 7 or so cases left.
  • Austin_SJ - May 30, 2011 11:15 p.m.

I got 5 stars on the White shoe case using the guide, I just need the arson cases to be finished now so I can get my Platinum.
  • GamesRadarMikelReparaz - May 30, 2011 11:59 p.m.

Sorry for the delays, everyone. Because of the sheer number of images that have to be captured, edited and uploaded (as well as other demands on my time in the past week), putting this guide together has been very slow going. However, it will be finished in the next couple hours. Thank you all for your patience thus far. @shockle: An early visit to the hobo camp earns you nothing but a quick conversation with a muttering hobo who makes it clear the hobo you're looking for isn't there. Are you sure you didn't cause too much damage, or miss something else?
