L.A. Noire five-star walkthrough and newspaper guide

Arson Case 5: A Different Kind of War

Newspaper 12 • Investigation: Nuclear Bug & Rodent Control • Investigation: Westlake Pest Control • Investigation: Dr. Fontaine's Surgery • Newspaper 13 • Investigation: Rancho Rincon Bunkhouse • The final chase

Newspaper 12

Start by heading out to Rapid Exterminators. You won't get anything useful out of the clerk, but look on the counter for the second-to-last newspaper.

Investigation: Nuclear Bug & Rodent Control

Just for the sake of completeness, head to Nuclear and talk to the clerk for another dead end.

Investigation: Westlake Pest Control

Finally, visit Westlake Pest Control, and you'll get an address for your arson suspect.

Investigation: Dr. Fontaine's Surgery

On your way through the surgery, keep an eye out for this cupboard just outside the office proper.

Open it, and you'll find what appears to be the remaining stash of Army-issue morphine.

Next, head into the office and check the body.

Start by examining Fontaine's head to see the injuries caused by his patient.

Next, check his left hand for a lighter with the initials "I.H."

Once you're done pawing at the doctor, look at the floor over by his bookshelf.

There, you'll find a crystal ball. Rotate it to get a good look at the splotch of blood.

Put the crystal ball down and head over to the table by the door, where you'll find a case folder.

Start out by tapping on Leland and Dr. Fontaine's names on the note at the front of the file.

Then, turn the page and tap on the Sawyer name, conveniently circled in red.

Finally, flip to the back of the report and read the psychiatric evaluation of the arson suspect.

Next, turn your attention to Dr. Fontaine's desk, where you'll find a map sitting on a large sketchpad.

Move the map and use the charcoal pencil next to the sketchpad to reveal a hidden drawing.

Next, grab the newspaper next to the sketchpad and superimpose the drawing you just made over it to reveal a clue.

Then, do the same with the map.

Newspaper 13

Before you leave the office, check the edge of Fontaine's desk for the next - and final - newspaper.

Investigation: Rancho Rincon Bunkhouse

After letting yourself in through the front door, check the workbench along the entry hall for a military-issue flamethrower.

Next, head into the room with all the origami cranes, and examine the map on the wall.

Next, look to the right on the workbench, and examine the crane you find there.

After that, turn around and look on the corner of this table for a folded square of paper that, when unfolded, reveals another Elysian Fields vacation flyer.

Finally, check the photo on the wall by the door for one last clue.

The final chase

Since you won't actually be graded at the end of this case, feel free to cause as much damage as possible, even though most of it will inevitably be to your (easily wrecked) pursuers. Keep up with Kelso and make it to the river, and the chase will be over.

After that, there's just more long action sequence between you and the finale, which shouldn't be too difficult so long as you can keep from getting shot to pieces. Blast your way through it (making sure to try out the flamethrower you'll find in the service tunnels along the way), and enjoy the ending.

To anyone asking, they probably didn't include DLC cases because either 1) it wasn't out at the time and/or 2) five-starring the DLC cases isn't required for the 'Sheamus to the stars' achievement/trophy. Also, if you're having any trouble at all with five-starring anything, turn off the clue hints and action skipping in the options menu. Doing this will automatically boost your rating by 2 stars. I'm surprised they didn't mention it in the guide. Also, to the guy below me, the game was made to be linear because that's how the mood is set. You're playing a good cop upholding the law. The only way they could really open anything up would be to create a GTA-like free roam. In which case...just go play GTA. I realize the game itself does have free roam, but that's mostly for street crimes and collectibles. I personally enjoy the classic 1940s vibe and style in the game. It's just really cool to finally be able to play a game set in that era and with that sort of atmosphere.

"L.A. Noire isn’t really the sort of game you can play through once and be done with." I disagree. It is linear to a fault.

after following the guide to the letter for some reason The Fallen Idol will NOT unlock for me. I have 5 star ratings on the previous two cases. Anyone have advice?

Thanks for the great guide. I could have played the game 50 times and not have gotten all the interviews correct.

This was very helpful! Great work again, Mikel.

    Superlative work lads. Well done.

@BLOODmuffins: Neither one of them did it. If you did everything else right, though, you should have gotten five stars for charging Rooney.
  • BLOODmuffins - June 15, 2011 4:48 p.m.

I charged Rooney in The Golden Butterfly and but only got three stars because Moller did it
  • LaiskaPummi - June 2, 2011 11:35 a.m.

Okay. I am currently replaying the white shoe slaying case (for the 3rd time) and I received the call about the sailor. For anyone else with this problem DO NOT GO TO HOBO CAMP when you first find out about it.
  • LaiskaPummi - June 2, 2011 11:06 a.m.

I need help with WHite Shoe Slaying! I didn't get the message that the Sailor is at the Central station. I checked and he wasn't there. Case objectives told me to Locate Sailor! Only thing I did different was that I visited the Hobo Camp right after investigating the crime scene. And I even couldn't use the phone to check for messages. Only message that I got was about the yellow cab.

This walkthrough is a humdinger, and you've given me a third wind to play the game :) Thanks Mikel
  • GamesRadarMikelReparaz - June 1, 2011 3:25 a.m.

@Austin_SJ: You're absolutely right. It's fixed now; thanks for pointing it out.
  • Austin_SJ - May 31, 2011 9:42 p.m.

That apostrophe is in the wrong place for Steffans. WHY IS THERE NO EDIT POST FUNCTION?
  • Austin_SJ - May 31, 2011 9:40 p.m.

Hey Mikel you've missed the second question from the Don Steffan's interview in "The Gas Man" case. The topic is suburban redevelopment fund and the answer is doubt.
  • sickyota - May 31, 2011 9:11 a.m.

Thanks for the info Mikel! I finished The Naked City :D once again, great guide/walkthrough, you guys worked really hard on it!
  • GamesRadarMikelReparaz - May 31, 2011 8:43 a.m.

@sickyota: The Naked City and Slip of the Tongue are both downloadable pre-order bonuses, which Rockstar didn't give us. As soon as we can get our hands on them, though, we'll either add them to this guide, or do a new one for DLC cases. Ditto for The Consul's Car on PS3, which is effectively delayed until the PSN store comes back online.
