Looks like Kevin Smith really has re-ignited his love of all things hockey.
While he’s always been a fan – heck a subplot of Clerks focuses on a game up on the Quick Stop store’s roof – Kevin Smith has been digging even further into hockey fandom.
And now it looks like he’s channelling that back to the screen, as he’s planning a film featuring the sport with novelist Mitch Albom.
So far, so standard, you might think – books get turned into films all the time. But this isn’t a novel they want to adapt – it’s a song.
See, back in 2002 former sports writer Albom and rock ‘n’ roller Warren “Werewolves Of London” Zevon collaborated on a tune called Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song).
“It’s about a goon, a hockey goon. It’s this very wonderful, soaring, moving story that’s also bittersweet and very, very funny, about a hockey player who just wants to play hockey, who loves hockey so much, but just sucks at it,” Smith tells MTV.
“The only thing he can do to be on a team is just be the enforcer, just be the guy who goes out there and beats the s***t out of people.”
According to Smith, he’s been a fan of the song since he heard it and has long been dreaming up a film around the story. So he did something about it.
“I got in touch with Mitch because Warren Zevon has passed on and we started talking about it and he was into it and into what I was kind of pitching.
“It takes place during the last gasp of the goon era of hockey when it was all about fighting.”
Which, by the director’s definition, puts it around the late 1970s, before the National Hockey League came about across the pond.
If it comes together, Smith apparently wants to crack onto making it happen next year or in 2011, once his duties on Bruce Willis cop pic A Couple Of Dicks is complete.
Oh, and Kev also thinks he has a chance to do something both special and, just maybe, awards-worthy. “I never once thought about winning awards or anything, but that movie I think can do it.
“If I play my cards right and we get the right people in it, it could be an award-type movie.”
