Karl Urban officially in as Dr McCoy

Now we know we said that the Star Trek stories would stop. And we have put our Trek-obsessed writer under heavy sedation so he’s no longer a danger to himself or others.

But breaking news is breaking news, so be prepared to consume the official word that Karl Urban has indeed signed on to play “simple country doctor” Leonard H McCoy in JJ Abrams’ new Star Trek movie.

It means Urban will be completing the main trifecta of Trek casting – joining Zachary Quinto as Mr Spock and Chris Pine as Captain James T Kirk in an adventure that will take place in the early years of the space heroes.

Completing the line-up boldly going into a new chapter for Star Trek are Simon Pegg as ship’s engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, Anton Yelchin as navigator Pavel Chekhov, John Cho as helmsman Hikaru Sulu and Zoe Saldana as communications officer Uhura, who, given Abrams’ love of action-packed women, will likely get more to do than simply be a glorified telephone operator.

Abrams is preparing to start shooting next month, and the movie will arrive like beautiful, foil-wrapped present next year. Oh, dear… time to up the medication…
