Joel Silver planning Escape From New York remake

Escape From New York is set to become the latest action franchise to get the reboot treatment, with Joel Silver planning to remake the 1981 film with a view to it becoming the first part of a new trilogy.

New Line had planned to reboot the series a few years, only for their rights to lapse, so Silver is teaming up with Studio Canal to take up the challenge.

Silver's vision is to cue up a new trilogy with an origin story, introducing a whole new audience to ex-con turned president-rescuing badass Snake Plissken.

Back when New Line were looking at the project, Tom Hardy was thought to be the favourite to succeed Kurt Russell, with Gerard Butler and Jeremy Renner also under consideration.

Liam Neeson's name has been mentioned in conjunction with this new incarnation, although given that he's around the same age as Russell, that would seem an odd choice for an origin story.

We reckon Hardy is the favourite among those mentioned so far, but don't be surprised to see some new names thrown into the mix over the coming weeks. Get set for the eyepatch to make its long-overdue revival...
