Joe Carnahan talks Death Wish reboot

On Monday we brought you the news that The Grey ’s Joe Carnahan was in line to reboot seminal revenge flick Death Wish . Carnahan has now confirmed the news, and has taken to Twitter to outline his vision for the remake.

“Guys. I’m doing Death Wish ,” begins Carnahan. “But this version is a re-imagining of the book and set in present day Los Angeles. The L.A. of Collateral … it’s on buses, cabs, metro trains. I want to show an unseen version of L.A. L.A. on foot. Prowling. Hunting. The vast emptiness of downtown…”

“[ Nicolas Winding Refn ] did a phenomenal job shooting L.A.” continues the director, in reference to Drive . “It took on a different dimension. That’s the key.”

He doesn’t go into any more detail about how he will tweak the plot or characters of the Charles Bronson starring original, but from that little synopsis, it sounds as though Carnahan plans to update the scuzzy despair of the original into a more contemporary setting.

The original movie sees Bronson play a bereaved vigilante, who sets about cleaning up the streets of New York after his wife is brutally murdered. No word as yet on when Carnahan’s remake is expected to open, but hopefully we should have some casting rumours for you very soon…
