BioShock is better than Halo 3 because of... STORY
Joe's argument: Halo's hackneyed "save the Earth from aliens" storyline has been rehashed ad nauseam since the invention of the science fiction genre. The characters - gung ho knuckle dragging meat heads - are cardboard cutouts of tired heroes.
BioShock, on the other hand, is brave and original enough to delve into the murky depths of human motivation and extremist ideology. While the story draws inspiration from heady philosophical sources like Friedrich Nietzsche and Ayn Rand, it never feels inaccessible. There are plenty of crowd-pleasing explosions and raging beasties to keep the action brisk.
Charlie's response: Look, I'm not going to argue against BioShock here. I'm the one who gave the game a 10 out of 10 review, after all. The storytelling is masterful.
But so is Halo's, albeit in a different way. While BioShock is a personal tale of horror and identity, the Halo trilogy is an epic in every sense of the word, a rousing galactic saga packed with larger than life characters, spectacular set pieces and cinematic blockbuster pacing.
It's like asking me to choose the better movie, Star Wars or Apocalypse Now. It can't be done.
