James Wan has made a convincing show of his blockbuster credentials ahead of Fast & Furious 7 , with his horror sequel Insidious: Chapter 2 going straight to the top of the US box office.
The film enjoyed a huge opening weekend of $41.1m in the US, the second biggest September opening of all time behind last year’s Hotel Transylvania .
Having cost just $5m to make, the sequel has already made back its budget eight times over, which will be music to the ears of FilmDistrict execs.
It also leaves the film needing just $13.3m to top the box office take of the original film , suggesting that a third installment is surely guaranteed to be on the horizon.
Insidious: Chapter 2 left its nearest competitor trailing in its wake, with Robert De Niro comedy The Family taking just $14.5m down in second place.
