It’s a good week for Tarsem Singh; earlier this week, his Immortals sliced its way to the top of the US box office, and now it’s done the same in the UK - only just slaying Arthur Christmas in the process.

The 3D swords-and-sandals epic starring future Superman Henry Cavill hauled in £2.16m, enough to prevent Arthur Christmas ’ sleigh from overtaking. The festive animation took £2.11m, but it'll likely have legs for the season, especially when advent calendars and school holidays roll around.

Spielberg’s former top spot holder Tintin is shoved to three, with In Time and Tower Heist completing the top five – the latter not benefiting from the Oscar controversy surrounding director Brett Ratner and star Eddie Murphy.

The last new entry is Johnny Depp’s The Rum Diary which staggers in at number six after taking £608,055.

Johnny English Reborn continues its impressive run by holding on at seven, with The Help , Paranormal Activity 3 and The Ides of March rounding out the top ten.
