When I grabbed the Wii U GamePad at the E3 booth, the presenter from Nintendo started to explain Hyrule Warriors to me, but he didn’t need to. This game is another in the long line of Musou games, a franchise that involves dozens of titles like Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors. I’ve sunk far too many hours into those Warriors titles, and I was happy to see those skills were easily transferable to Hyrule Warriors.
The demo drops me into what seems to be an early stage of the game, with Moblins invading Hyrule in a massive battle. As Link, I run around the level pulling off combo after combo, switching between light and heavy attacks with ease, then knocking down dozens at a time with one well placed charge move. The battlefield items may be replaced with Zelda’s Rupees and Hearts, but the classic Warriors’ combat is intact.
The story within in stage develops the same too. I had to run from one end of the massive area to the other in search of Moblin guards and generals to wipe out, all while getting advice from fellow soldiers Impa and Zelda--it’s pretty cool to finally see Zelda take such an active role in defending her kingdom. My demo ended with this sortie complete, and I’m left thinking that this game might just convert Zelda fans into Warriors’ obsessives.
