Huge drop in Japanese 3DS sales isn't slowed by free games

Shares

Following last Thursday's announcement that the 3DS's price will be reduced by a third, sales of the handheld have also dropped. Last week, Nintendo sold only 16,415 3DS systems in Japan, or about half of what it sold in the same market the week before (31,826).

In the same press release that announced the price cut, Nintendo offered 20 free downloadable games, all of which are re-releases from previous Nintendo systems, to anyone who owns or buys a 3DS and logs into the eShop before 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 11, the last day before the price drop goes into effect.

Sales appear likely to dip even lower this week, since the announcement came late last week, meaning some of the week’s purchases were made before anyone knew Nintendo would readjust its sales strategy.

The numbers from last week's Japanese console sales are as follows. Sales from the previous week are in parenthesis:

1. PSP: 36,659 (26,854)
2. PS3: 20,704 (23,343)
3. Wii: 18,232 (17,114)
4. 3DS: 16,415 (31,826)
5. DSi LL: 5,267 (5,258)
6. DSi: 4,625 (4,921)
7. X360: 1,616 (1,546)
8. PS2: 1,594 (1,475)
9. DS Lite: 138 (155)
10. PSP go: 7 (14)

Sales of the PSP go also fell by about half, from 14 units to seven, but nobody noticed.

I think that Nintendo's NES release as the 20 free games is clearly just a slap in the face, as many people already owned these games in some way of form before that, and other people prefer to buy these NES games on cart for the true experience. Instead, Nintendo should have give 20 free DSiWare/3DSWare games. Sorry Nintendo, but NES games should be free in the first place, as they just don't have market value anymore.

@BigKingBud I admire your passion but I don't follow you when you say things like "we have to buy what they're (Nintendo) selling or we are not gamers." You've said similar things to this before, don't worry I'm not stalking you but you keep popping up on every nintendo based article. You obviously care about this subject, as do I, but I don't agree that we MUST support Nintendo or we are not gamers. I think it's precisely BEACAUSE we're gamers that we are getting fed up with Nintendo. Their name, no matter how glorious and innovative it may have been in the past, is now synonomous with lazy re-releases and excruciating shovelware. Back when it wasn't actually possible to create realistic, breathtaking game graphics then Nintendo's cutesy, stylised colourful characters were a credible and great alternative, but things move on. Once you've seen what games like Skyrim, Uncharted and Rage can look like on other platforms all of a sudden Mario, Donkey Kong and even Zelda are a bit of a joke really, not competing in the same league. Not saying they should be killed off, great for nostalgia fixes, but seriously, have something else to offer as well. Nintendo are falling way behind and it's not OUR fault. Blindly buying everything they do is not supporting them, it's encouraging them to sit back and get worse.

Well they lost about 10,000 Sales from selling older DS models. I mean not only are they competing against their competitors but themselves as well.

@garnsr: Crap, my bad. Big difference >.< My sister corrected me. @BigKingBud: Please, at LEAST go to troll school so they can teach you how not to be so obvious. This is exactly what it would sound like if Nintendo hired Japanese people to post on American gaming websites and plug the 3DS in the comments.

@BigKingBud Dude....you're just the biggest dumbass ever...

I'm sure Nintendo will recover from this. We're all forgetting the record-busting profits they raked in thanks to the Wii; that kind of capital isn't going to disappear overnight. Coupled with the fact that they have already suffered through two relatively unsuccessful (compared to their contemporaries) consoles, the N64 and the Gamecube, I think we're overreacting by thinking they're going the way of Sega just yet. The funny thing is, all this publicity is actually making me want to buy a 3DS, even though I've really no good reason to. So yes, GR, please stop releasing all this 3DS news, but only because you're inflaming my impulsiveness!

I admit. I lol'd at the last line. P.S. Captcha, how the HELL am I supposed to type in fractions and superscript letters into your goddamn box? *clicks to get another one*

@garnsr they play Monster Hunter and that's about it as far as I can tell I was really interested in the idea of the 3DS before it launched but now it seems to be proving itself to be nothing but a gimmick and I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole
  • garnsr - August 5, 2011 3:16 a.m.

@Justinbanda They sold 7 PSP Gos, not PSPs. Go recheck the list, the PSP is the top selling system. What the hell do the Japanese get to play on them, that we don't? I haven't used mine in some time. I'm guessing that the guy in the picture is probably not one of the few people buying a 3DS in Japan.

Sorry but 10 year old gba games dont sound enticing especially on a new console that promised new games. NEEEEEEWW!
  • BazyLastard - August 5, 2011 1:11 a.m.

All this means is people in Japan are waiting for the price drop. And, that most people aren't interested in free (old) games as much as they are saving $80 up front. If the numbers are still down the first week the lower price is in effect, then they should worry.

McCarthy I'm sorry MST3K was distracting me.
  • Redeater - August 5, 2011 1:07 a.m.

@BigKingBud Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that WAS the case when both the original Xbox and the 360 was released. I'm pretty damned sure they started turning a profit on the 360 a couple years ago. If your telling me that 6 year old hardware has somehow remained the same price I think your mistaken. Also, they don't make money off of the consoles.....everyone knows that. Companies have to PAY Microsoft licensing fees in order to make games for the 360. Furthermore your not Cormac Mcarthy.....
  • justinbanda - August 5, 2011 12:50 a.m.

@the article: PSP? They still make those? And they sold a WHOLE 7 CONSOLES?! That's like, a whole... thousand dollars... ish. @BigKingBud: Dear lord, the troll hath struck again. Please just admit you're a Nintendo fanboy and allow the rest of us to avoid your somewhat-obvious bias. To everyone else: HAS ALEX SIGNED INTO THE 3DS STORE YET?! I'M SO WORRIED, he seemed so confused!
  • UsernameLoser - August 5, 2011 12:31 a.m.

It's what they get for recycling the same games.
  • chrisat928 - August 5, 2011 12:10 a.m.

People need to stop mentioning PSPGo sales. It was discontinued in Japan, and retailers are just selling off their remaining stock.

Yep thankyou for free games Nintendo, but you know how much you have fucked up,cause you know you have been relying on your fanboys since the snes days the N64 may have had mario 64,ocarina of time, goldeneye but that was it unless you have rose tinted glasses that was the only 3 games worth anything on that system, and the gamecube despite how much i love the machine only had pikmin, killer 7,smash bros, eternal darkness, resi remakes i am a die hard Nintendo fanboy, but thay should go out with some dignity, they will eventually go the way of sega which will be a shame but they are so out of touch with core gamers,I have been a nintendo fanboy for 20n years and even i am thinking ther time is done and they should just fuck off,yep and i have a 3ds and a wii,and they are now an embarresment to the industry, just stop nintendo been a fan for 20 years but won't miss you one little bit, bring on the next xbox my console of choice
