How to install Skyrim Special Edition mods on PS4 and Xbox One

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Special Edition has arrived on consoles, returning us to the world of Tamriel with fancy new current gen visuals. Probably the biggest change is the addition of mods to the PS4 and Xbox One versions, allowing console players to expand on the vanilla game for the first time. How you access and activate these mods may not be obvious, so here are the steps you need to follow to make alterations to your gameplay experience.

Firstly, you'll need to set up an account on Bethesda.net if you don't already have one. From that site, you can select your platform from the drop down menu to see what mods are currently available, as well as adding mods to your library to make them easier to find on your console.

Next, load up Skyrim Special Edition on your console then head to the Mods section of the main menu. The first time you do this you'll need to log in to your Bethesda.net account. NOTE: You need to access the Mods option from the main menu to get started - you can't add/remove them from the Mods option in the pause menu in-game.

Here you'll see any mods you added to your library from the website at the top of the page, followed by all the available mods broken down into a variety of categories for easy identification. If you're not sure where to start, then head to the Most Popular or Highest Rated sections to see which mods the community is recommending.

Select a mod for a description of its effects, along with the option to download and enable it. Repeat this for as many mods as you like, but keep an eye on the descriptions to see if there are any compatibility issues or requirements noted to make it work.

Once you've downloaded and activated all the mods you want, exit the menu and you'll be prompted to reload all game files. With that done, you can now jump into the game and check out all the changes that have been made. If you need a reminder of which mods you have running, pick the Mods option from the pause menu to review them - though to deactivate any you'll need to return to the main menu.

And that's it! Enjoy experimenting with these mods to tailor the game to your personal preferences, though remember that you can't earn any trophies or achievements while mods are running so be wary if you're hunting for virtual rewards.
