Holiday Buyer's Guide 2006 - Xbox 360

For the seen-it-all... Viva Pinata (read ourreview)

Looking for something to surprise the bored or jaded gamer? You know, the one who's already beaten every other recommendation on this list - plus unlocked all their Achievements? Send them for a complete loop by sending them to Pinata Island.

The climate will take a little getting used to... crisp and colorful compared to the usual dark and grungy. And they'll have to retrain themselves not to automatically shoot everything in sight. The locals - rare species of paper-mached, candy-stuffed creatures - prefer to be fed, sheltered and romanced.

Just because Viva Pinata doesn't fit the massacre-soaked mold of most 360 games doesn't mean it's not a blast, and it's not kiddy just because it's cute and accessible - there's a serious amount of micromanagement needed. We'd recommend it to parents and children, but also to anyone looking for a refreshing change of pace.

Runner-up: LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy
