High School Musical 3 tops the US box office

The third incarnation – subtitled Senior Year – of Disney’s wildly successful High School Musical series has grabbed first place in this week’s box office across the pond, taking $42 million.

The musical’s success forced usual October box office king Saw to second place with Saw V nabbing $30.5 million. The week’s third new entry, long-delayed cop drama Pride & Glory, could only scrape into fifth with $6.3 million.

The rest of the releases were either small runs (such as Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche New York, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman), one buried release Passengers, with Anne Hathaway and Clint Eastwood’s latest, Changeling, starring Angelina Jolie.
