Yesterday’s Writers Guild Awards saw something of an upset, with Spike Jonze’s
beating hot favourite
to the gong for Best Original Screenplay.
The Joaquin Phoenix-starring film looks to be picking up some serious momentum heading into the Oscars, and has become many punters’ favourite ahead of the likes of Blue Jasmine and Nebraska .
Meanwhile, Billy Ray’s script for Captain Phillips was awarded Best Adapted Screenplay, beating out strong competition from The Wolf Of Wall Street .
Whether or not that turns out to be such a strong Academy indicator remains to be seen, particularly given that 12 Years A Slave , the big Oscar favourite, was not eligible for the awards.
Sarah Polley also took home the award for Best Documentary Screenplay for her work on Stories We Tell .
