Hancock flies high at the US box office

The reviews were either mixed or unkind, but Will Smith’s Independence Weekend earning power seems unabated as America turned out to see him play sozzled superhero Hancock over a long holiday weekend. And by long holiday, we mean five days, in which the film took in $107 million ($66 million of that over the three-day weekend), according to studio estimates.

Wall-E held on nicely, dropping only to second place and adding $33 million to boost itself well over the $100 million limit. It’s taken $128 million in two weeks. Wanted took a bigger dive, losing around 70% of its business to finish the weekend with $90 million. Get Smart is showing stronger than expected legs in fourth, nabbing $11 million for a $98 million running total, while Kung Fu Panda is now at $193 million.

At sixth, The Incredible Hulk sits angrily on top of a pile of $124.9 million, with Indiana Jones sticking at seventh on a $3 million weekend and a $306.5 million total. It’s close to passing Iron Man as the big earner of the year so far.

In eighth place, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl failed to ignite its core teen audience and has only made $6 million to date. Sex And The City is doing much better in ninth, with $144.8 million so far. Finally at 10th, You Don’t Mess With The Zohan is on $94 million.
