Green Day Rock Band review

Welcome to a paradise of broken dreams

Words: on June 8, 2010

That’s not to say there aren’t some fun moments and shout-outs to fans a la Beatles Rock Band. The song “FOD” opens with no drum track, so drummer Tre Cool roams the stage aimlessly, harassing Billy Joe and generally behaving like Tre is known to behave. You’ll also see tons of typical Billy Joe facial tics that make the performance feel a bit more Green Day than a polygonal assemblage of technology.

In another bout of tit for tat, once the minimal Green Day vibe does manage to sink in, you’re plucked right back out when one of their notable lyrics is censored. Yes, the band known for its foul-mouthed singles and rebellious, punk-ish behavior has a game that is censored to avoid an M rating – because lord knows kids can’t hear “shit” anywhere else. It’s truly baffling, because the audience for this game is Green Day fans, who already own albums with cussing and don’t mind the language. Does Harmonix really think an M rating will eat into their Green Day sales that much?

Outside of the gameplay you’ll find a treasure trove of unlockable photos and videos featuring the group throughout its years of playing and touring. These are awarded the same way as in Beatles, where getting three stars on a song unlocks one photo, five stars gets you two and then another specific challenge unlocks one of several videos. Fun stuff that does a better job of summarizing their rise to fame than the comparatively bare career mode.

Of course, none of that will matter when you inevitably transfer these songs over to Rock Band 1, 2 or the upcoming 3, which is a hugely welcome feature missing from Beatles. That kind of makes this entire game feel unnecessary, more like a $60 DLC expansion than a true standalone game. It’s a common issue with all of these band-specific games (Metallica, Aerosmith and so on) that Harmonix avoided by making Beatles so visually specific. Green Day is just weaker by comparison.

Which kind of brings us full circle – if you like Green Day and Rock Band, get it now. If you’re iffy on either, there’s not enough interesting stuff going on to pull you in. I’ve never been big on the Beatles, but I beat Beatles Rock Band solely because I wanted to see what the game would do next. It gave me a new appreciation of the band and opened my eyes to why they were such a force – Green Day doesn’t quite do that, opting instead to offer superior gameplay.

Fun as any Rock Band game could be, but only if you’re already invested in both brands.

Do I like Green Day? YES! Do I like Rock Band? YES! Am I going to buy this? YES... when it's $30

Green Day Want To 'Keep Adding' Earlier Songs To 'Rock Band' http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1641108/20100608/green_day.jhtml

I hate the fact that this is censored. It basically ruins the song. Why not just make censorship optional, and turned ON by default? That way the little kids won't have to hear naughty words, and we can rock out to FOD like it was meant to be heard.

I love you Brett. Got the game today, it really is a blast to play. Their songs are so energetic, especially the ones on American Idiot. I never realized how complicated some of Tre's old drum beats were, expert is a beast.

^ They paid me so much! Rock Band 3's already got a 10 with its name on it!
  • DryvBy - June 10, 2010 12:09 a.m.

Wow. So a game that is basically Rock Band 2 with new songs and "avatars" is worthy of a 8/10? How much do you guys get paid?
  • RandyChimp - June 9, 2010 5:35 p.m.

Tried the demo, bored the living shit out of me. Rock Band should really focus on a band that works with more than 3 or 4 chords per song. We want more metal rock bands!

I read another review somewhere else that said only half of 21st century breakdown was in the game, and you could the get rest through DLC. Also, that if you by the standard version you have to pay $10 to be able to use the song on RB1 and RB2. But the more expensive version gave you all of the 21st song and let you transfer over without paying additionally. Clarification on this might help other people who want to buy the game. Not myself though, I was just reading this hoping you would bash it. =)

@jmcgrotty I only care because they skipped 10 years of music and crammed the "leftover" songs into more popular venues. There really should have been a fourth location and time period that collected Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning instead of shuffling them into such specific, older periods. They did it right in Beatles, but here not so much.
  • banjokazoozie - June 9, 2010 3:28 p.m.

i wish there was more of the other albums like shenanigans in this. but tbh i will buy it anyway
  • jmcgrotty - June 9, 2010 6:17 a.m.

"they’re decked out in eyeliner and the black/red outfits that go with that album, yet the setlists include shoehorned songs from Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997) and Warning (2000)" So, let me get this straight... you are bothered by the fact that the band looks one way but is playing songs from earlier in their career? Have you ever been to a concert where they ONLY play their newest material? You would have a point if you complained about them playing Good Riddance at the dive bar, but not in the situation you're talking about.
  • GodofPS314 - June 9, 2010 5:01 a.m.

Oh and as someone else said, Rock Band WHO! YEAAAAHH *in Roger Daultry scream voice*.
  • GodofPS314 - June 9, 2010 5 a.m.

How about another one like the beatles? Green day is good but their setlist isn't that big. I love The Beatles Rock Band it is fantastic. How about Led Zeppelin, ROlling Stones, Nirvana. I have RB2 BRB and Lego Rock Band. SO THIS IS A MUST SKIP
  • RamenDragon - June 9, 2010 2:29 a.m.

I think the censorship is completely intolerable. Green Day's albums have never been released in any form but explicit. Green Day refused to stock 21st Century Breakdown at Wal-mart because Wal-Mart wanted them to make a censored version. So why........?
  • ventanger - June 9, 2010 1:53 a.m.

Censored?! Wow. How *yawn* punk and *yaawwwwn* edgy of you. Green Day = fart noise.
  • Doctalen - June 9, 2010 1:33 a.m.

@theemporer: If Rock Band Rush came out I would be the first person in line at Gamestop or Bestbuy. Same with The Who. Actually on topic, that last bit about just transferring the songs is what my friend was going to do so win for me. Also what the **** for the censorship, really, as if no one has heard that before.
  • Cyberninja - June 8, 2010 11:05 p.m.

they let ragna say the s word in blazblue so why not let green day go uncensord
  • Romination - June 8, 2010 9:22 p.m.

    ...this is out? Hm.
  • Redeater - June 8, 2010 9:18 p.m.

BIAS! But seriously I wish I wasn't all rock banded out when the beatles was released. I would however burn down an orphanage or two for some Rock Band Iron Maiden. Until that is released I most likely will not touch anymore rockband/guitar heroe game.
  • batman5273 - June 8, 2010 8:41 p.m.

I saw you online last night playing RDR, andd i noticed you had green day achievements. after all the conversation on the podcast, I was going to ask you what you felt about it. I didn't want to bother you. So now i know the answer.
