Grand Theft Auto IV: Is the PC version the best?

We examine the improved visuals, controls, the new video editor, and the intense system requirements

Words: on October 30, 2008

If you haven’t played Grand Theft Auto IV yet, you missed out on one of the best games that released this year. Don’t just take our word for it. Critics across the board lavished GTA IV with perfect scores and glowing compliments. So we’ll assume you haven’t been living under a rock and know the gist about what Rockstar’s latest entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is all about, and focus about what’s in store for the upcoming PC version of the game.

Let us be perfectly clear. We’ve played the 360 version. And we’ve played the PS3 version. But GTA IV on the PC looks better than its console counterparts by leaps and bounds. There’s a much longer draw distance for starters. You can see buildings and structures further in the background, allowing you to drink in the thick and gritty atmosphere of Liberty City. The PC version is also capable of handling more vehicles on the screen at once. More traffic means more fun as you rip and tear through streets and alleyways.

But it’s the little details that stood out the most. Rockstar went through great lengths to create a living and breathing city- and Liberty City looks best on the PC. Gone are the fuzzy billboards and signs that were easy to gloss over as you sped through town. The satirical ads for fake products like Pisswasser beer stand out with vibrant colors and a level of detail that’s much sharper than the 360 and PS3 versions.

Above: The explosions are brighter and Niko’s grizzled face looks grittier. But our eyes were drawn to the little details, like the way the signs in China Town stand out so clearly

If you’ve played either of those versions, you’ll also have noticed how facial features on characters are much sharper. After viewing a demo of ‘The Three Leaf Clover’ mission, the one where Niko and company rob a Liberty City bank, our eyes were drawn towards a large scar running down Packie’s cheek that we never noticed before in the cutscenes. Add up all these little details that the PC version highlights, and it’s hard to imagine going back to GTA IV’s console predecessors.

However, PC versions of games that were originally released on consoles are notorious for demanding more from your rig when it comes to running them on the highest visual settings, which begs the question…

It’s good to keep in mind that the PC version will allow you to adjust sliders for all kinds of visual settings to improve performance and frame rates. Rockstar let us turn down all the settings to give us an idea of what GTA IV might like on a less-than-stellar rig. Even with all the details, traffic levels, and effects turn down, the game still looked decent. And with that in mind, we present you the minimum and recommended system requirements for the PC version of GTA IV.

Minimum System Requirements
OS: Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz, AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4Ghz
Memory: 1.5GB, 16GB Free Hard Drive Space
Video Card: 256MB NVIDIA 7900 / 256MB ATI X1900

Recommended System Requirements
OS: Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz, AMD Phenom X3 2.1Ghz
Memory:  2 GB (Windows XP) 2.5 GB (Windows Vista)
18 GB Free Hard Drive Space
Video Card: 512MB NVIDIA 8600 / 512MB ATI 3870

Above: If you’ve got a powerful PC, GTA IV will look amazing. But can your rig handle it?

We were surprised to see that the minimum system requirements ask for at least an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Even games like Crysis and Fallout 3 don’t require a Core 2 Duo processor to run the game.

They recommend Q6600? WTH? I just built a machine with one of these because it is mid-high level machine (best bang for your buck) and I can run Fallout 3 at 1280x1024 with all settings on Ultra with no stuttering. This better not indicate that they've done a terrible job optimizing the PC port.

I really hope my rig can run this. I'm sick of my PC not being able to run good games.

If the only reason to get GTA4 for PC is the graphics, that seems like a bit of a waste of money. Apparently a lot of people aren't up to the recommended specs, and you'd get the same experience out of playing it on console. Either way, if you bought it on console or PC the day it came out, you'd still be out the same $60 for generically the same experience. They are just making visual upgrades to the game, not adding new features or new missions. I've bought nearly all of the GTA games on PC and haven't yet noticed any Rockstar-developed patches or mods to the games that make them any different than on console. If you just want Liberty City to look prettier, then by all means shell out the money for the PC version. Otherwise, play it on console and at least enjoy the game itself instead of wanting to see it with better detail. Were the graphics really that bad on console? I thought they looked perfectly great, but I guess I don't have the eye for detail some people do. It sounds like they are trying to improve on something that doesn't really need to be messed with, and are making a stable thing worse off than it needs to be. If it ain't broke, don't think you need to fix it.

my pc is for the internet, itunes and schoolwork. even though i have all the requirements, i never play games on my pc. that's what i spent £500 on my ps3 and another £650 on games for. gaming. and i'm bored of gta iv now anyway. online still isn't that bad, but the only reason i'm playing it at all is for the trophies for my trophy cabinet on home.
which reminds me, has anyone got a spare european home beta code? home is the game i want this year and the pics almots make me cry. pleeeeeeeeeeease!

Since this site is the spiritual successor to PCGamer.com...those of us who made the transition would most likely be buying it on PC for the first time, as opposed to buying it for the PC in addittion to a console version.

$60?? PC games rarely (if ever) cost more than $50. :)

I love the video editor idea. More games should include these types of options.

One thing that seems unclear in the article is exactly how good GTA IV looks at low visual settings. I'd be interested to know if it looks comparable to the console version or if it is better/worse at those settings. The article only lists it as "decent."

Recommended specs are pretty high for the average game. Its the kind of game GTA IV is designed to be.

These are problems specific to the game itself (except the CTDs), regardless of the system you run it on.
Console games receive patches too. The consumers do the beta testing nowadays and pay for the privilege.

To tell the truth, I have yet to play San Andreas on PC, but I had absolutely NO problems with either Vice City or GTA III. The reason that it is harder to get games working on the PC as a platform is the fact that there are thousands of different hardware combinations possible..whereas with consoles, for each specific model, the hardware is exactly the same on all of them. the good thing about PCs is the ability to patch the problems.

Previous GTA ports HAVE been a bit shabby, HOOfan. Look at all of the issues in san andreas, Water planes won't take off and you can't dive under water unless you have the frame limiter on, silly bugs which could have been fixed with a little play testing, and many people complained of random crashing to desktop on some systems. I heard that vice city had a weird "up/down" mouse sensitivity issue which rendered the game unplayable. I just want to make sure that they've ironed out any bugs before I part with my cash because rockstar are less than forthcoming when it comes to patching their pc games.
I'm just a bit worried after hearing about the abysmal rush job they've done on bully. They're more than happy to throw out a broken game for a quick buck so I just hope they've treat GTA and the PC platform with a bit more respect.

Previous GTA ports have been shabby? No...they ALSO were better on the PC than PS2.

So this is all looking good port-wise?
Previous GTA ports have been pretty shabby. I cancelled my preorder of bully after the few terrible reviews I read, have they taken their time over this one?

Mehhhh. The GTA series is massively overrated. If you've got a PC, there are far better games available. Let the Konsole Kids have it.
