Golden Joystick Awards 2012: Best Shooter category – who are you voting for?

As voting for the Golden Joystick Awards 2012 enters its final weeks, we take a look at each of the individual categories. Today is the turn of Best Shooters category.

Best Shooters shortlist:

Who are we voting for?

Matt Cundy (UK Editor): I had a ridiculous amount of fun with the bullet cam and I’m still a sucker for bullet-time so it’s absolutely got to be Max Payne 3 for me. And if there was a Best Soundtrack category I’d be voting for it there as well. But there’s not. So Best Shooter will have to do.

David Houghton (UK Associate Editor): Surprisingly tricky one to judge, this year. Despite essentially being a massive list of sequels and remakes, there are a few absolute gems screaming for my vote. Tribes Ascend is an utterly unique multiplayer shooter with a sheer joy of movement and control like no other. Spec Ops is a brutal, meaty, clever, and smartly uncomfortable horror show. But I'm going with Resistance 3, for turning a totally average series right around with a brilliant degree of flair and finesse, and some deliciously free-form combat. Yes, it's basically an unofficial remake of Half-Life 2 in terms of settings and story, but if you're going to steal...

Justin Towell (UK Content Editor): Binary Domain deserves more praise than it got. Sure, it's predictable and a little clunky... and the voice control is pretty pointless... but Rage disappointed me, the Darkness II became very one-note very quickly and I have CoD fatigue, in all honesty. So Binary Domain gets my vote for embracing the fact it's just a video game and just trying to be as entertaining as possible.

Those are the shooters getting our votes, but what about you – who are you voting for? Tell us in the comments.

Head to Golden Joystick Awards to vote. Voting closes 22 October. The Golden Joystick Awards 2012 take place 26 October.

Gears 3 for me. Syndicate would come in second cause of them trench coats.

When I choose a long time ago, I chose CoD: MW3 and even now, I still stick to that decision. To me, it's not the game itself that annoys me at times, it's really the PEOPLE who play it that makes me stray away from it a lot of times but regardless of how much I try to avoid it, MW3 keeps bringing me back. However, it doesn't bring me back more so than I do with CoD4 and MW2 which both are heavily better than MW3 in terms of multiplayer.

2012 still has 3 months to go and the most anticipated games are arguably released within the period of these months. Why is this happening so soon?
  • artcellrox - October 1, 2012 8:11 a.m.

Simple. Look at the list again. Notice how GoW 3 is there? And I'm sure you'll remember (if not, I'll refresh your memory), that the game out as early as April 2011. So basically, this show is going to cover mid/late-2011 to early/mid-2012. If so, expect titles like Dishonored and Halo 4 next year. Yeah, odd way of doing it, but whatever. =/

It is pretty badly set up. guild wars and the new warcraft expansion are both missing from the mmo section, whilst the section on what is most anticipated is missing dishonored amongst other games. I still voted tho.

Wow, out of these I've only played resistance 3 and max payne's single player through and have managed to keep binary domain shrink-wrapped for six months but I've at least managed to play 30 hours of BF3 and a bit of MW3's multiplayers. I liked MP3 and R3 evenly so I'll probably give my vote to R3 because it'll need all the help it can get because only about six people played it.

I'm surprised by how few of these I've played so far, and i think, at the point I voted, I'd only played Gears 3 and RAGE. And RAGE was CRAP.

So you guys are doing this BEFORE Halo 4 and Black Ops 2 and Medal of Honor Warfighter come out....
  • ParagonT - October 1, 2012 5:48 a.m.

    Definitely Battlefield 3.
  • BladedFalcon - October 1, 2012 5:22 a.m.

    Easy, Max Payne 3

Hm...going for the lesser known titles. The Darkness 2 wasn't really that interesting single-player wise, but the MP was a blast on the easiest difficulty; with 3 other players. We were pretty much invincible. Syndicate was fun throughout the SP & MP, and really gave off a near future vibe (similar to Deus Ex: HR). Spec Ops wasn't really my cup of tea. Never tried MP, and the SP was a little confusing and hard as balls (especially on fubar). Future Soldier was my favourite however, the SP was fun (couldn't really follow the story) and the MP forced cooperation between teammates. However, the matches could often be one sided; with many high levels players decimating the other team with better weapons & equipment. Still I almost always had the most points at the end of a round with <6 kills.

No Battlefield 3?? I would put that first, then Resistance 3, Starhawk and then Spec Ops. Although obviously you can only pick one. Desperate to try Ghost Recon though, my ps3 died and the preowned xbox I ordered grom Game died (error E74) in less that 4 hours

i have ghost recon on the ps3 and its pretty good, but if you dont have friends that own ghost recon stay away from it cause the multiplayer its really team play based and youll hardly find people who focus on the objective (there no tdm or free for all) mostly you find yourself with people who only try to get the most kills...wich doesnt help to win in any way...
