Golden Joystick Awards 2012: Best Action/Adventure category – who are you voting for?

As voting for the Golden Joystick Awards 2012 enters its final weeks, we take a look at each of the individual categories. Today is the turn of Best Action/Adventure category.

Best Action/Adventure shortlist:

Who are we voting for?

Matt Cundy (UK Editor): Asura’s Wrath. Epic scale and scope of storytelling, all played out with an insane cast of glorious megalomaniacs, and made interactive with some of the most outrageously mental moments of gaming I’ve ever had to frantically finger-stab my way through. It caught me completely off guard and I loved every second of it.

David Houghton (UK Associate Editor): There's only one feasible option here. In a year when Uncharted turned out to be uncharacteristically bloated and sloppy, Batman turned up with one of the best third-person action, stealth, and open-world games ever made. It's dense of atmosphere, smart and genuinely affecting of story, and a significant and kinetically pristine gameplay upgrade over the first one. It also creates a rare open-world in which every architectural detail matters and every side-quest feels like a legitimate, significant contribution to the whole narrative and sense of place. It's perfect.

Justin Towell (UK Content Editor): Well, it's got to be Sonic Generations for me. I'm playing through Arkham City at the moment and it's incredible, but I got a lot of enjoyment out of Generations and it's such a relief to finally have a great 3D Sonic game. It's not perfect, but it deserves more praise than it got, if only for that incredible Modern Sonic Green Hill level. Pure bliss on a Blu-Ray disc and it never, ever gets old when you're speedrunning it.

Those are the action/adventure games getting our votes, but what about you – who are you voting for? Tell us in the comments.

Head to Golden Joystick Awards to vote. Voting closes 22 October. The Golden Joystick Awards 2012 take place 26 October.

Has to be Arkham City for me, one of the best games I've played this generation!

Tough call, Uncharted and Batman are pretty much neck and neck in my opinion, both were a bit disappointing though because of how overhyped they were and practically everything minus the endings had been revealed to the public before release meaning they had few surprises throughout. I considered sonic but in the end my raging uncharted fanboyism got the better of me.

Sonic Generations has my vote its the best sonic game in years, excluding the final boss everything was good and it was clear what you always needed to do, unlike batman which throws you to the shark after you beat it with vague instructions.

    Batman is the clear winner.

Honestly, and i can't believe I'm saying this with Batmadn: Arkham City being there, I'm voting for Saints Row: The Third. That game is just so... fun lol. Sure the campaign is ridiculous but it's done so well. The entire game just screams "We don't give a damn let's just do it all no matter how messed up it is!" And it actually does single player and Co-op very well which is something I find a lot of games can't pull off. Either it's better played alone and the Co-op tends to just be a "Come play me with a friend if you don't want to pay any actual attention to what's going on" or the more common one "If you play me without friends I'm boring and you'll wish you didn't waste your money". Saints Row 3 I feel does both without sacrificing anything from the other.

Arkham City for me. It was note perfect. That said, I've only had time to play five of the eleven nominees, but I have fully five more in my backlog waiting for me (Saints Row The Third, Dead Island, Assassins Creed: Revelations, Asura's Wrath, and Darksiders II), so I'll be ready with a fully informed opinion on this category... by about July of next year. Try not to get too antsy while you wait.

I hope Batman doesn't win, otherwise it might become the CoD of action/adventure

You don't have to worry, the Arkham games aren't published by Activision or EA XD

I think Darksiders deserves more credit. So I would choose that one, the first was good and second seems even better. P.S. http://steam-games-free.com/?i=yLv5qprne

Well, personally I didn't think any of the ones I've played on this list were amazing, but I guess out of the list, i'd say batman. I still need to finish it too. But if I get around to getting asura's wrath before the end of the year, I have a feeling I'll change my mind. It's just so badass that it's funny.

Again, the only one of these I've actually played has been Darksiders 2- and honestly, I'm not sure I'd even vote for THAT to be the all-out action game of the year. I'm started to realise how badly I've been keeping up with games this past year or so.
