A pre-release build of Gears of War 3, playable but in a very visible state of incompleteness, has been leaked onto the internet via torrent. The build, accessible only on Xbox 360s which have been modified to play JTAG developer code, was released over the weekend and has already been the subject of aggressive preventative measures by Microsoft, which is currently working with law enforcement and internal security teams to track down the source of the leak.
Microsoft has released a statement stating that the leaked game content “is not from a final build and is not representative of” the Gears of War 3 that will release in September. YouTube has been flooded with gameplay videos verifying this: glitches and development placeholders abound, though the basic graphics and gameplay mechanics do look to represent Gears of War 3 inasmuch as they depict a gritty third-person shooter in which unfeasibly huge men hide behind crumbling architecture and shoot creatures in the face.
It's hard to imagine the leak will hurt sales much: with the abundance of bugs and artifacts on show, the leak's closer in appearance to a blurry bootleg than a legitimate pre-release circulation of a finished product. Still, if you were to Google thoroughly enough, you might uncover some decent story spoilers – so for the two or three of you who play Gears for the storyline, stay away from the internet until September. The rest of you, the new Horde 2.0 mode isn't going anywhere.
