Going from zero Metroid games in eight years to three in two years was a welcome change. But why do both of spacey-chic heroine Samus Aran's first-person adventures have to be so damn similar? Per usual, you start with the most basic of sci-fi equipment; a meager blaster and roly-poly, morph ball for locomotion. Eventually, these make way for multi-targeting missiles and a chasm-spanning hover jump. As you explore the rocky, swampy and airless terrain ot the planet Aether, new paths will open ...

Okay, this isn't exactly a full game but you still get a First Hunt demo free in your DS box (if you imported from the US), so we reckon it deserves an appraisal. The game comes with two very different modes: training, and a multiplayer version. The latter is perhaps the one you'll get the most enjoyment out of, allowing up to four DSs to go head-to-head in three different arenas. It's surprisingly accomplished for a handheld. The visuals are crisp - if maybe a little blocky - and, crucially, ...

Like the animated movie it's based on, publisher THQ's Monster House attempts to offer all the frantic frights of Halloween... in July (arguably the second most frightening month of the year). Ultimately, the game ends up being like most summer movie releases - a bit fun, but ultimately forgettable. Monster House isn't offensive, but at the same time it doesn't have anything to make it stand out from other action-adventure games. It's a very average title that will seem above-average to kids ...

At first glance, you may consider Clash of Ninja another quick-cash, cartoon tie-in designed to make somebody a lot of bank. It'll pull in some serious cash, but not because of blind fanboy devotion - this is a lightning quick, anime-soaked whirlwind of a fighting game that'll speak to anyone looking for an accessible, chop-socky brawler. Played a one-on-one fighter before? Sure you have. As such, you already know everything there is to know about Clash of Ninja. Pick an adolescent ...

People often rip on Madden for coming out every year with nothing but minor tweaks. Well, we feel inclined to mention that the first Clash of Ninja was released in March...of this year. It was an exceptionally energetic anime scrapper that looked just like the cartoon on which it's based upon and offered enough action for all styles of fighting fans. And here we have Ninja 2, essentially the same game with just a handful of enhancements. And you know what? They're more than enough. First off, ...

LeBron. Iverson. Shaq. T-Mac. Unlike the college game, the superstars of the NBA unquestionably dominate the action. NBA Live 06 replicates this with its new freestyle superstar moves, further cementing Live as an undeniably fun hoops franchise. The freestyle superstar moves enable the league's best players to perform risky but incredible feats that can turn the tide of a game, just as they do in real life. For instance, playmakers like Steve Nash can zip no-look passes to get teammates an ...

The thud and blunder of a mismatched game of Madden NFL , the godfather of American football sims, is something few people are going to enjoy. When one player is way too good at the game for a fair contest, there's no way to give the uninitiated a chance to win the odd game or two. This is where NFL Street comes in, or at least that's what we thought after spending an unhealthy amount of the summer enjoying the brilliant NBA Street, its basketball cousin released earlier in the year. But, you ...

Ikaruga. Know what it means? We'll give you a moment. If you're still stumped, then you probably don't care about Odama. The very definition of a niche title, Ikaruga is a game that few non-hardcore gamers know about, a top-down, GameCube shooter that's as challenging as it is beautiful - and it's very beautiful. The point is, if you didn't track down Ikaruga and then spend hours mastering each and every level of that punishing but polished game, then you probably aren't going to want to spend ...

The Official Games Radar Reviewer Handbook (Third Edition) cites two important criteria to look for when reviewing anime-based games. The first? They have to appeal to the fans of the anime. And the second? They also have to be fun enough to appeal to everyone else. Some games only manage the first point; a rare few manage both. Bandai's new One Piece: Grand Adventure is a textbook case of an anime game that is packed full of fan service but is lacking in areas of greater substance. Even so, it ...

Mario Party practically invented the party game, a sort of video board game where winning relied almost as much on luck as actual skill. Love it or hate it, the thing sold gangbusters, inspiring a legion of clones often based on kiddy anime licences. One Piece: Pirates' Carnival is the latest of these, featuring the lovable and wacky cast of Shonen Jump's famous "One Piece" manga / anime. But unlike most of its peers, Pirates' Carnival does enough stuff right to actually make it worth a play or ...
