No matter how hard you try, you can never, ever look truly cool while playing a videogame. Any game, any console. Luckily anyone else in the room is most likely to be watching what's happening on the TV while you're squirming in your seat and wrestling with the joypad, but you can imagine how embarrassing it would be if you suddenly became the centre of attention. In your mind, you'd be heroically protecting the president's daughter from hordes of pitchfork-wielding lunatics. In reality, your ...

Despite having a name like an awful cake - or maybe a dangerous aftershave for old men - Baten Kaitos is, in reality, a very good role playing game. Namco may have to be banned from fox hunting after its mediocre efforts with Star Fox Assault, but they've made amends. And a cake for us all to share, however awful its name may be. We won't bother you with the plot; imagine the plot of every RPG ever, added up and divided by a million. It's likely that it's nothing you won't have seen before, in ...

As a great poet once wrote, there ain't no party like an S-Club party. But while the pop icons have long since consigned their paper plates and pointy hats to the same dark cupboard as their funky funky beat, spare a thought for poor Mario. He's been throwing exactly the same party for the past six years, and even if he still has the appetite for another helping of sponge cake and jelly, we're not sure if his guests retain the same enthusiasm. This time around, Mario's chronic case of sequelitis ...

Eight years! That's how much time has passed since Star Fox 64 made us even bigger fox fans than the Countryside Alliance. Now the Cornerian government has once again summoned the Star Fox armada to rescue the Lylat System from the assimilating alien aparoids. Cue the usual mix of galactic flying, blasting and... running? You see, Nintendo have entrusted Namco to take care of one of their crown jewels, and the new boys have certainly spiced things up a bit. Only a few of the levels now remain ...

Capcom are turning into Nintendo. By this we mean that their games of late are not only utterly brilliant, they're also capable of huge originality as well as crowd-pleasing brilliance. Check out the gore-soaked wonder of Resident Evil 4 for the very definition of the latter example, but return to the primary-coloured thrills of Viewtiful Joe as a paragon of the former.Frankly, we were amazed that, in this day of sequel after sequel and licence after licence, Capcom dared risk the cash on ...

Third party games on Nintendo consoles rarely come much bigger than this. Standing shoulder to shoulder with Zelda as our most eagerly anticipated game of 2005, we've given over more pages of the magazine to Resident Evil 4 than any other game. Capcom have promised so much. By their own admission, survival horror has become more than a little stagnant over the past few years. Sure, recent instalments in all the major series (like Silent Hill) look nice enough, but pre-rendered backgrounds, ...

Whunk. Clap. Whunk. Clap. Clap clap clap. Whunk whunk clap. WhunkawhunkawhunkawhunkaWHUNK. The sound of one hand clapping? Nope. That's the noise of Jungle Beat, the loudest, craziest, most original game of the year. Your family, friends - and possibly, neighbours - are going to hate it. To be honest, they're probably going to hate you. And yes, controlling a 2D platform game with a set of plastic bongos does sounds child-eatingly crazy - but bear with us on this one. The controls are simple. ...

Okay, we'll keep this one short as we reviewed the US version just a couple of issues back. We awarded it 84% and (surprise, surprise) the score isn't going to change any time soon. If you didn't get a chance to read our review last time, here's the general gist of what to expect. It's a 'traditional' Japanese RPG and a good looking one at that. The characters are all beautifully designed (they're cel-shaded) and the specific locations you enter throughout the adventure are rarely anything ...

Dancing games? Old hat. Singing games? Well, if you're as tone-deaf as we are, you're out of luck. So how about a bit of drumming? When Donkey Kong finds a pair of barrels washed up on a desert island beach, he discovers that they're actually 'legendary' musical instruments. In other words, bongos. So he sets out to find busking fame and fortune, aided by Diddy Kong and the rest of the hairy mob. Yes, this is a rhythm game with a plot, of sorts, involving apes, bananas, and a couple of tunes ...

Last year we complained that Tiger Woods 2004 was basically just 2003 on steroids. This year it's so big, most players with full-time jobs and social lives will never see more than half of it. You almost need a map to find your way through the menu options. But the game has made some impressive developments in aspects other than mere size. Expert players will find they have more control over the ball, while there are playing aids and simpler game modes for novices. And the amount of ...
