It's been a long and no doubt gruelling road from conception to Pillage to Future Tactics, with the gloomy footnote that Zed Two closed before its game reached the shelves. In the sense that the game fulfils its intent - to prune that most spiky of genres, the strategy RPG, into something manageable, intuitive and bright - it was worth the uncertain wait.It was evident from our first preview that stripping away the clutter and complication of movement grids, action points and rules within rules ...

Let's start at the beginning, shall we? No, not Peter Parker's initial encounter with a radioactive arachnid, but those priceless first minutes after Spider-Man 2's opening cinematic, where you meet Treyarch's impressive (not to mention ambitious) new rendition of Manhattan head-on. As you may already know by now, this latest Spider-Man game has 'gone GTA', offering an expansive, free-roaming environment. Standing on top of one of the game's hundred or so skyscrapers, you await the end of the ...

We're suspicious of any game that tells you to collect X amount of Ys within the first five minutes of the start. So when we came to Shrek 2 - which commands you to collect a bunch of eyeballs as its opening task - we really didn't hold out much hope. However, despite being pretty similar to Asterix in both its collecting marathons and its reliance on repetitive battling, Shrek 2 does have one thing going for it. That one thing being that it isn't a complete disaster. It's hardly going to win any ...

If we did as much sporting activity as Mario - tennis, fighting, golf, jumping on turtles' heads - we'd be pretty disappointed if we still looked more Luciano Pavarotti than Mr Gay UK. But that doesn't seem to stop him and Toadstool Tour, a follow-up to Mario Golf on the N64, has him taking to the golf course again.Alongside him, of course, are the usual cast, all looking as good as they ever have in a Mario game. There's Peach, with a swing that scatters rose petals behind it, and Donkey Kong, ...

Ignore the GBAs for a moment, even though the game insists on them as a requirement. Forget about the singleplayer too, even though it transpires to be more simple and satisfying than expected. The real question is how Crystal Chronicles shapes up as a straight multiplayer. Initial observations are hopeful: teams of two to four players (with two to four GBAs, and two to four link-up cables) are supported, and saves can be opened in both single and multiplayer modes. Closer inspection, however, ...

The thud and blunder of a mismatched game of Madden NFL , the godfather of American football sims, is something few people are going to enjoy. When one player is way too good at the game for a fair contest, there's no way to give the uninitiated a chance to win the odd game or two. This is where NFL Street comes in, or at least that's what we thought after spending an unhealthy amount of the summer enjoying the brilliant NBA Street, its basketball cousin released earlier in the year. But, you ...
