Super Mario Sunshine

The many faces of Mario

A unique look at Nintendo’s mascot he’d rather you forget

Words: Henry Gilbert, GamesRadar US

As Donkey Kong ended up one of the most successful games of all-time, a sequel came pretty fast, only this time Mario was the villain. And he reveled in it, probably because it was the only chance he ever got to be evil. He is constantly seen with whip in hand, ready to abuse the caged Donkey Kong while trying to kill DK's son.

Despite Nintendo's official characterization of Mario as a short, fat, round, scared coward, once again he ended up even more lost in translation with each port. Perhaps Nintendo got in the console game to stop Mario from looking so weird.

Above: Mario is near Gargamellian in his evil here

The only real constant is that Mario’s a total dick and Jr looks more mentally handicapped than childlike. But none can compare to this piece of merchandise for sheer incompetence at drawing Mario.

Special Bonus Weirdness

Even that puzzle book got Mario’s outfit right, while this commercial seemed to just assume what the villain of the game looked like after playing it for a second and then spinning around in a circle five times. Still, it’s got some cute surrealistic touches, this live action recreation, even if Mario’s a Carnival Barker.

Nowadays, people finally know how to draw Mario properly. The Donkey Kong pictures of Mario will haunt me for a while.

Man it was weird to see a super deformed Mario. I'm kinda intrigued to see how far it went if it wasn't for the fact that I can't read Japanese. Damn.

Imagine if mario stayed like jumpman and today, he ended up tall, muscular and looking like a badass brawler from the 1920's (crazy hat). I bet bowser isnt gunna mess with that mario.

So...are his overalls suppossed to be red or blue? They switch back and forth mostly through this article, and even once his hat was blue on the Mario Bros box art.

Weeeeell, if you must know, until Super Mario Bros 3 it was Red overalls on a blue shirt, but after that and ever since it's been Blue overalls on a red shirt. It was also then that his hair color changed from black to brown.

How could that Mario manga last more than 26 volumes? And why does he have a bazooka in the cover art? Mario doesn't use guns, at least not when people are looking!

Did anyone notice that King K. Rool was chasing Mario on that Nintendo Power magazine?

Did anyone notice that King K. Rool was chasing Mario on that Nintendo Power magazine and not Bowzer?

Dude, it's a good thing Mario makes so much money from his games. All that shitty plastic surgery must have cost a fortune.

Uh, that's not K Rool, that's Wart, the villain from Super Mario Bros. 2. Unless you're making a joke about how similar they look, in which case I agree.

Red pants > Blue pants.

Is it just me, or does the picture of Mario holding the NES controller sideways look like he is holding a Wiimote
GRHenry  - 10 months 17 days ago
TrigunGunner: That's not a gun, it's the Super Scope, the SNES light gun.
GamesRadarMikelReparaz  - 10 months 17 days ago
@Theonik: I think the explanation here is that the artist was drawing an NES controller from memory and had never seen one actually being used.
