A rather impressive list of videogame currency

Coins, gil, rings and more in our roundup of gaming green

Words: Shane Patterson, GamesRadar US

It’s Tax Day. If you’re a part of the working class, you (hopefully) filed your state and federal returns. Kids, never mind what we’re talking about - your parents have filed you as dependents because you’re deadbeats who don’t contribute to your family’s income. We jest!

What do taxes have to do with games? Money is earned  and spent in some of your favorite videogames. How else you are you going to buy extra parts for your shotgun or get an extra life? You need the scratch, yo. We’ve found a heap of gaming currency to remind you just how important the green is for videogames.

Used for purchasing weapons like assault rifles and flamethrowers.

Cash for potions, armor, items, etc.

Why didn’t they just say “gold coins?”

Kill some enemies, take their hearts (brutal), trade with gods, get some items.

Collect 100 of these for an extra life. The closest thing in real life is pennies, but those are bronze and are almost worthless.

Purchase items and upgrades by collecting spare building parts. Only in the future are the items that hold shelves together worth something.

Kollektable kurrency used to unlokk extras like outfits and kharakters.

As the national currency of SimNation, the value usually fluctuates between titles. Whether that’s due to real life SimNation market tendencies or just for good ol’ fun hasn’t been specified by developer Maxis.

Standard boring currency. Used to buy items. Move along.

Always popular in apocalyptic wastelands. Used for barter.

on the fact of bison dollars, does bison even know how badly he would throw off global inflation rates if he started distributing a new currency because i don't?

I couldn't help but notice you missed out the "imperial septim" from the elder scrolls games.

jamminotha1n2: I'm sure Bison knew. He had the forethought to know that a defibrillator built in to his suit made him impervious to bullets, so I'm sure he thought the money situation through. Because it totally makes sense that a defibrillator can raise you from the dead after taking a shot to the brain.

Actually, I just spent the last day and half studying for my econ final, so I have sort of an idea. By increasing the money supply, Bison would create a greater demand for currency at a lower interest rate. This low interest reduces the opportunity cost of holding Bison Bucks instead of putting them in bonds, and people spent more. This increased spending leads to an increase in aggregate demand. However, being in a open economy with the other Street Fighters, there are secondary effects of Bison's monetary injection. The interest rate of Bison's currency being lower than that of the rest of the world, domestic assets will be sold in favour of foreign ones, and the real exchange rate will fall, causing the Bison Buck to depreciate in value, and increasing net exports, and net capital outflow equally. This increased amount of export requires more Bison Bucks however, and this increased need for currency will shift the money demand curve to higher levels, to the eventual point where the interest rate of Bison Bucks is once again equal the interest rate of the rest of the world, at which point in the increase in net exports will level out, and the demand of Bison Bucks will be in equilibrium with the supply at world interest rates.

Now the only question left unanswered is what is Bison's main export?

Perhaps we could great a global market for fake game economies and see how The Capital Wasteland's bottlecaps fairs against the Pokedollar. Although if everyone switches back to the gold standard then Sonic and Mario will be the two richest game characters ever. Not that they already aren't...
