Todays dose of "huh?" comes from Nintendo, which has suddenly decided to file a request with the US Patent and Trademark Office for the phrase "It's on like Donkey Kong." The phrase has been in the popular vernacular for several years, so why Nintendo would want to register it now is... oh wait, Donkey Kong Country Returns comes out this month. There you go.
King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters is without question the best videogame film of all time. The documentary told the David and Goliath-level struggle over who holds the record for official highest score in Nintendo’s arcade classic Donkey Kong. Billy Mitchell, the mullet-wearing arcade master and the first person to ever “beat” Pac-Man, had held it for decades, but when challenger Steve Wiebe topped it, Billy’s friends at Twin Galaxies, the official high score keepers for all games, chose to not recognize his score. King of Kong followed Wiebe’s adventure to make that score official. In the years since filming ended the two have traded the top spot, with Billy regaining the high spot last month. But today Twin Galaxies verified Steve Wiebe’s submission, and he’s the King of Kong once more...
Purenintendo.com is hosting a video game marathon this weekend (Jan. 16 starting at 7pm EST). The 'Nintendo Icons' Video Game marathon focuses on the greatest Nintendo characters in some of their finest games including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The marathon will be 48 hours and run through Monday night to raise money for Child's Play. All proceeds go directly to Child's Play and donations can be made using Paypal.
