Game: Star Fox

Song: Ending theme

Composer: Hajime Hirasawa

Above: Ending theme from Star Fox

Everyone knows the Mario and Zelda themes by now. Hell they're practically part of mainstream pop culture, so easily recognizable that even someone who's barely played games in the last 10 years could pick them out. But for all their greatness, I truly feel like Star Fox has the best theme of any Nintendo game, one that sounds truly epic and deserving of a full John Williams-style movie treatment.

This particular track plays over the credits of the SNES original. It's essentially a three minute callback to the game's overarching theme, a tune you hear in the menu screen and during the level select, plus at various points throughout the missions themselves. It's one of the first pieces of game music that I felt was really striving for a cinematic feel instead of "video game music," a trait echoed in all the other songs in this first Star Fox. They sound less like Nintendo and more like Star Wars.

Case in point, this track from the Space Armada level, where you're attacking a massive invading fleet of ships. You fly above, below and even inside these hulking space craft while this intense barrage of drums beats down your throat. It's a feeling that even the superior N64 game couldn't replicate.

Above: The music has aged better than the game

It's strange how we're nearly four years into Wii's life cycle and still haven't heard a peep about a new Star Fox game, even when it's a series made popular by dogfights and air-to-ground action. Seems like motion controls could actually work in this case. Maybe we'll hear something at E3 2010?

The Starfox music really sets it apart from its 64 counterpart. I love them both, but I almost prefer the SNES version as it just seems more serious and dramatic. I love "Space Armada" - I've defintely listened to it on the interstate as I weave through traffic at high speed.

The music just does not match a videogame starring a ship-piloting fox.

I own this game. My super is down at the cabin for those rainy days. Still pop this in when I'm there and shoot a few blinking things. This music is great.

I love the original Star Fox game. I still remember playing the game at the Kiosk at my local Walmart before it even came out. It was one of my favorite SNES games and the 64 version was among my favorite multiplayer games on the N64 along with Goldeneye. I've been so disappointed with all the Star Fox games since Star Fox N64.

why the hell have they not released this game on the Virtual Console yet? i remember the years in which i used to go to a friend's house and play through this game. the easy route i can finish, the medium route, can get to level 3 or 4, and the hardest route, level 3 or 4 also. it's been a while since i've played it. they release it on the VC, and i will obtain it ASAIC. if you do not know your abbreviations by now, you shouldn't be using a pc so no, i will not explain what ASAIC is, all i will say is use your common sense. maybe they should start the series over from the beginning again and disregard everything that happened since star fox adventures and after that.

I loved the music from Starfox, but you left out the control select theme. Here's a really good orchestral version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGNDdLPJT9o

I only ever played this at my cousins but the music has always stuck with me, very nostalgic article for me.

Shit Brett. You never fail with this. Starfox is definitely one of my absolute favorite SNES games with awesome music. Excellent choice.

  • philipshaw - May 25, 2010 10:13 a.m.

I remember this song being the perfect ending music when I beat the game and it still sounds great today
  • elpurplemonkey - May 25, 2010 8 a.m.

Great choice Brett, though I do actually prefer Star Fox 64's music. Both soundtracks (and games) were awesome though.
  • 510BrotherPanda - May 25, 2010 6:54 a.m.

I'm glad I got this and Starfox 64 from that store Star Games on Powell Street before it closed down.
  • shyfonzie - May 25, 2010 6:23 a.m.

i liked those sounds. they were pleasant.
  • Spybreak8 - May 25, 2010 5:06 a.m.

Ah man Star Fox is the shit, well was the shit that is. I loved played the 64 version but it was probably due to my age at the time. Young and naive, the ability to absorb anything, Star Fox and his crew were a bunch of space faring badass Tog Gunners. Great music, has a blend of FF and Zelda to it. Ironicly I am listening to Junichi Nakatsuru on my 360 and I'm not a huge fan of Soulcalibur (just not my genre) but I love the music.
  • Shinramen - May 25, 2010 5:02 a.m.

Brett, fantastic pick. Forgot how great that fanfare is, gave me chills to hear it sneak up in that ending theme. Can't tell you how excited I would be for a true sequel.
  • Ridgley - May 25, 2010 4:47 a.m.

Your daddy squealed reeeeeeaaal good before he DIED!
  • Pyroco101 - May 25, 2010 3:35 a.m.

Star Fox should be Nintendo's patron arcade-y shooter with Gears-style ground battles by now
