Today, we’re paying tribute to River City Ransom. We remember having tea at the Rise & Shine Café, learning Dragon Feet at the Grotto Book Store, beating down The Twins with iron knuckles, and making The Generic Dudes scream “BARF!”

In many ways, River City Ransom was years ahead of its time, blending traditional beat ‘em up gameplay with role-playing elements. But back then, the only thing that mattered to us was fueling up on food from the Grotto Mall to power-up our punches and kicks.

There’s a special place in our brain for all the fond memories we have of beating down street gangs on our way to Slick – and right next to them is River City Ransom’s unforgettable theme song, the one that played when running about the city. Give it a listen. The fast-paced beats will rock you with nostalgia as it quickly shuffles into the climactic solo.

Does anyone else think that the guys on the Japanesse art looks like Yu-Yu-Hakusho?
  • wharcraff - June 13, 2010 9:12 p.m.

This a pretty nice one. Makes me think of Renegade for the NES. The arcade version has some nice tunes too. checkout 3:40 onwards to see your guy take on multiple Samuel Jackson/Shaft.

Downtown ( I dunno 2nd word) Story... hm... I like it! Oh, and have you guys heard the GBA one?
  • MB2KSpicules - May 28, 2010 9:16 p.m.

They so need a XBLA/PSN re-release for this.
  • R_U_Guys_From_British - May 28, 2010 12:34 p.m.

I hate that western box art is always more angry, moody or macho than its Japenese equivalent
  • philipshaw - May 28, 2010 10:21 a.m.

Never heard of the game but the music is amazing, fast paced and catchy. Great pick Brett
  • shyfonzie - May 28, 2010 5:50 a.m.

    Awesome upbeat song.
  • 510BrotherPanda - May 27, 2010 10:11 p.m.

The guy on the left looks like Keanu Reeves.
  • Modroneman - May 27, 2010 9:56 p.m.

If you enjoyed this music, you gotta listen to the music from World Cup Soccar for the NES. Made by the same company, the music was some of my favorite of all time on the NES! Thanks for this!
  • CH3BURASHKA - May 27, 2010 9:19 p.m.

    Pretty jammin'.
  • vinzz_zzz - May 27, 2010 8:20 p.m.

    Absolutely love this game!
  • Ensoul - May 27, 2010 7:49 p.m.

I was just thinking of this the other day. Coincidence? I think so. The boss fight music's pretty cool to. Has soon as that last guy flickers out of exsistence and turns into bouncing coin, that deep beat pounds in in.

God, I loved this game so much. Discovering the secret shop in the tunnel was one of my first proud gaming moments. BARF!
