Personally I love game music, and listen to it even when not playing. But at some point we've all turned down the VGM and listened to our own tunes.

Actually, I played through Oblivion recently while listening to my entire backlog of TalkRadar! (Episodes 1-20, since I picked up starting with Ep. 21)
Apart from that, I love to blast me some Skillet, TFK, RED, and/or Demon Hunter while playing. They go great with fighting and racing games in particular.

Well I usually listen to the TR or some trance. Usually whatever the latest cd that I downloaded is.
This is my favorite song ever, though.

The in game music, aside from one game.
Burnout Paradise,I use custom soundtracks on. And more than a few times I've put on Talkradar, which was a bad thing. I crashed alot more because I was laughing alot.

I normally lesson to some kind of Electronica, Most of the time I cant stand the crap that's in video game's. It's always some horrid classical/rock/techno/rap shit that never sound's right.
The few soundtrack's I do lesson to that are actually in game are:
Any and all the Tekken soundtracks
Mass Effect
Assassins Creed (love just random stuff like that)
Fallout 3 (Because what they have in there is actual music)
Left 4 Dead (atmospheric)
Bio-Shock (more atmospheric)
SSB/SSBM/SSBB (love me some nitenda remixes)

Actually I don't play anything besides what the game does. I find it distracting to have music playing when it's not supposed to be playing or to have a certain type playing that doesn't fit with the game. The only time I did like it was with GTA: San Andreas for the Xbox. I ripped a CD or two to play on the radio stations when I was in the car and it fit with the gameplay. The only downside was there weren't any of the commercials.

I usually listen to the in-game music, except for:
-custom soundtrack (whatever's on my HDD) when I play Burnout Paradise and Warhawk
-podcasts (TalkRadar, 1Up FM, Rebel FM, Retronauts, Beyond) for when I create a new level in LittleBigPlanet.

i dont really listen to anything much when playing my consoles, since i am usually talking to my friends or paying attention to the story.
but when im playing my old school games like Sonic, i listen to talkradar or other podcasts (but now that 1up yours is dead,,,D: )
i cant listen to songs becuase i dont want to lose where i stopped at the podcsat and have to find it again (this is pretty much why i havent listen to any music on my mp3 (besides the ones featured on talkradar) for about a year now (before it was because i was too busy listening to George Carlin and Dane cook)

The only games I play regularly and have to listen to my own music is Gran Turismo 4 and 5: Prologue.
While playing those I usually listen to some Super Eurobeat or Trance/House. Which is kind of strange since I don't listen to that type of music otherwise.

Go ahead an laugh but i listen to non-in-game game music. Ace Combat 4 works with megaman perfectly.

I always listen to whatever the game is throwing out at me, that's what the developers put in there, thats what I should hear. Except when my brother comes home and inevitable only wants to play MGO, he turns up his hardcore rock 'n' roll type music, which is okay at first, but it gets unbelievably old after a few HOURS. When I refuse to play MGO and continue to play other games, he still puts that shit on and I loose my mind.

i listen to anything and everything wen i play games, but usually its either music from guitar hero/rock band, tdar, or indian music. tdar's my favorite thing to listen to tho, cuz then i'll be laughin so hard, i dont care if i mess up or die.
