Question: Scary Games

Ok, It's getting close to Halloween and after reading Charlie Barratt's article "Why Scary Games Are Never Scary" I want to know....
What is your scariest gaming moment?
Despite what the article said, if you've played and survival horror game you've been genuinely scared before. What's your story? What game and what part?

I'll start... When the first Resident Evil game came out I was staying at my dad's house. My dad lives about 15 minutes away from Santa Cruz Cali in the hills. At the time the house was surrounded by trees and there wasn't a neighbor for about a mile each way. Home alone, I kept busy playing games and RE was up, I got as far as the very FIRST zombie when I jumped out the couch and slammed the power button on my PS1. That night I had nightmares about a zombie attack, lol

Not to jump on the bandwagon, but Resident Evil 1. I threw the controller 5 feet in front of me when those dogs jumped through the windows in the hallway.

Just after I got my PS1, had to be 1995 or something near there, I bought the Alien Trilogy game. A friend and I played the first couple levels and we were freaking out big time. I don't know. We were 11 or 12 at the time and something about the darkness with the aliens and face huggers coming at you scared the crap out of us. After a while it lost the scariness but those first levels though were scary then.

Well I haven't ever really owned any horror games, so my scariest moment was probably playing Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots when I was fighting Laughing Octopus and she would just pop from outta no where since she was covered in octocamo. I know its kinda lame but it's all I've got.

God damn you attentive T-darians!
This was my question for this week! And we haven't recorded the cast yet!
Oh well. This is *POOF* the offical Question 9 thread.
I'll obviously say mine in the cast (TalkRadar 25, posting on Halloween!), along with Chris, Charlie and Mikel.

Epic win. T-shirts for all. Come on, was no one else freaking out with the first splicer in Bioshock? When she kills the dude who was sent to get you and then proceeds to rip a hole in the only protection you have from her? And then it's dark and you can hear her and you see her destroying stuff and the TV explodes and I just wet my pants again talking about it?
First game to ever scare me ever was CarnEvil. I was young, there were weird mutated carnies (which are only slightly different from regular carnies) attacking you in first person, like they knew you were there, with their creepy faces and stupid hard strategies and making Christmas scary for me as a little kid.
Oh, and Eternal Darkness. Something about giant monster diety thingies with their lesser monster thingies and the insanity really got to me.
But it was my friend being scared because his Chao data was 'deleted' off that memory card was the best moment of my life.

The bathtub scene in Eternal Darkness made me put the controller down and leave the room.
Around when the Resident Evil remake came out I was playing it late one night and I left my room to go to the kitchen. As I left my room, I looked down the hall to the right towards the kitchen, and then I turned and looked down the hall to the left. About mid-point between the look to the right and the look to the left, I heard a moan erupt from the left at the far end of the hall. Suddenly, I saw a shape shambling out of the darkness. My heart started racing and froze up, absolutely petrified with fear. That is... until I realized it was my dad yawning on his way to the bathroom.
And I don't know how many times I've been playing Doom and jumped out of my seat when I rounded the corner and there was a Lost Soul floating there.
Oh, heh... Sonic CD has scared the hell out of me, too. I'm sure this one needs an explanation.
There are two codes for Sonic CD which display... horror. When the first code is put in, the screen flashes white and then goes to an image of a freaky as hell muscular, humanoid Sonic. Then it starts playing the equally creepy Robotnik theme music. The first time I saw this image it was burned into my mind, and I had many sleepless nights trying to get it out of my head. All I can find is a YTMND of it, complete with music. I guess that's as good as anything. The impact still works, apparently. My stomach just knotted up from looking at it and hearing that music for a split second.
Alright. The second code displays another freaky as hell picture of Sonic, only this time he has a weird face and is repeatedly tiled across the screen with Japanese letters across it. I always wondered what it said, and then I found the translation in a game magazine many years ago. The Japanese text apparently says, "Infinite fun. Sega Enterprises. Picture of evil man." I remember that translation verbatim.
It's odd that the only game I've ever actually lost sleep over wasn't even a horror game... but rather a Sonic the Hedgehog one.
Oh, and the backwards message on Sewer Shark (or probably any Digital Pictures game) scared me, too. If you put the disc in a CD player and listen to the audio track, you hear:
*phone rings* "Good afternoon, Digital Pictures." "Hee-ah der ah, hee-ah der ah, hee-ah der ah."
Then silence. At the time I didn't realize it was backwards. When I got a computer I started messing around with .wav files and stuff and reversing them for fun. Then I realized that they sounded a lot like the secret track in Sewer Shark, so I loaded it up and gave it a shot. When reversed, the track says, "Number nine, number nine, number nine." Suddenly it wasn't so scary anymore.

dude, did you know that when i first "locked-on" a cartridge that wasn't sonic 3 or 2 to sonic and knuckles, and that screen where it's sonic, tails and knuckles all like "NO WAY! NO WAY! NOW WAY?" it scared the bejesus out of me? i thought i broke the damn thing. or.....pissed it off in some way.

The scariest noise in gaming is the sound of the disc spinning to load the scary thing that's going to jump at you. Resident Evil had this, I think Tomb Raider did too. The PS/Saturn generation had the sound of the Whirring Disc, and you knew something bad was going to go down.

Oh, shit! I forgot about that! Okay! Wow, I was going to mention this but forgot. My Sonic the Hedgehog recurring nightmare!
Many times throughout my life, well, at least since 1991, I have had a nightmare where I'm walking through the house I grew up in, only it's run down and dark. I make my way back to my old bedroom and push the door open, and the television is on. It's the only light in the entire house. My eyes are starting to water as I type this. The moment I look at the television, I see the title screen to the original Sonic the Hedgehog, and it's the part where he's, the frame where he's... oh, hell. This:

It's that shot, and when I see it, I can't move at all. I'm completely paralyzed and I'm fixated on that image as a deafening, high-pitched wail begins to echo through my ears.
When I awake from this dream, I'm absolutely terrified. It sounds stupid, I'm sure, but it troubles me deeply.

I will admit to being creeped out by that damn first splicer. And I never really could play Doom 3. The atmosphere was oppressive as hell.
My scariest gaming moment, though? It falls to a couple things. In the first Silent Hill, the school scared the piss out of me. Those little children totally unnerved me. But then again, normal children do that, too.
The second one I am not proud of. I was playing Doom 64. I was walking down a dark hallway, and I kept seeing something shift in the shadows. And I had to stop. I felt like a total pansy.

Sonic on Saturday mornings was my absolute favorite. That (and Pirates of Dark Water) constituted the Golden Age of Saturday morning cartoons.
