I expected being a feature writer for Gamesradar to be on that list. You have imtermet nerds constantly hating on your articles, for being long and informative no less.
On a side note, I loved the decade by decade listing of consoles. I never realized there were so many. Mean I have more collecting to do.

I would have loved to put our own jobs on the list - and yes, they aren't easy - but I was trying hard to avoid being a typical self-pitying games jouro. Despite all of our bitching, we don't have it bad, and often times we do have a lot of fun.

Speaking for myself, I'd actually say that feature writing is one of the most fun parts of our job, if not the most. You get used to the hating after a while, since most of it's a knee-jerk reaction and not really heartfelt. The only times it's really irritating are when: A) it's clear the haters haven't actually read the article and are only reacting to the headline, B) there's a handful of people all going "7 pages? I'm not going to bother reading it, but I'm sure going to complain about it!" or C) people who only pay attention to us when we write something about boobs go around disdainfully proclaiming that that's all we do.
Otherwise, it's awesome.

The Game Testers should of been further down the list. It can be really hard as I heard from MANY websites and shows about the job. Imagine the guy who had to test Halo 3 or GTA 4. About more pressure than 2 anvils squeezing you from both sides.

i think the part about game store clerks isn't entirely true. Sure, there are a lot of geek's out there who want the job, but that doesn't mean clerks are easily disposable. Now, i can't say from experience what its like to be clerk, but i do know they have to know they're stuff about games to help customers know what to buy.

Hey guys. I have just read this article and it is totally correct. I do QA. I won't say the company just in case they read and I get in trouble haha!
Anyway, all these positions are 100% right. I've seen a programmer lose his outside and family life because of the deadlines we have had. It is bullshit to be honest. This doesnt stop me playing games or hating them. I appreciate them more because when I come across a bug or a glitch in a game. I just think, whatever, somthing that can be easy to miss. It's when they arn't fixed with update patches that wind me up.
Anyway. I also did freelance reviewing and to write professionally about a game is greatly satisfying to know that someone will read and say, yeah he/she covered all the points, unbiased and so on. Really good feeling :D
I had also worked in Gamestation for a few years and it was cool at first because I thought "Working in a games shop, discounted games, AWESOME :D" I was very wrong. After 3 months I wanted to kill the next customer asking when GTA:SA was appearing on Gamecube or even PS1. Yes you read right. I have a friend who recently got fired from a job at a indy games store because he wasnt what they were looking for which didn't make sense because he knew more than anyone in that company about games, polite, well presented. So yeah, my two cents.
If you plan to work in a games shop or even QA Testing if you don't already. To survive, agree with everything that is said, even if you don't agree and keep your head down. In companies like that with most, the "Sales Assistants" are just cannon fodder and can be gotten so very easy.

I'm a 3D artist in Orlando Fl, and I applied for a job at tiburon back in 06. I've always had the opportunity to do so before, but I pretty much hate sports games so there really was no point in applying. Then came Superman, and that's when I applied, and got in.
I'd say it has been the worse job experience I've had so far. Its more like a sweat shop than a job. The main thing to strive for in the QA dept is to move up from an orange badge, to a blue one. That means that for the lucky few, you go from slaving in front of a tv trying to find bugs that aren't there anymore, to casually spending time online looking at funny things on youtube, did I mention they get paid more to not work? Being a blue badge was the holy grail of QA. Oh and since you didn't have to log in any bugs, you really couldn't get fired for performance / bug count issues.
It is also NOT a "starting point". As an artist, I was shot down right at the application process; so I had to start at QA. Later on I told my "boss" why I was there, and even tried showing him my portfolio, which in turn led me to, behind locked doors, have to endure a speech along the lines of: "Was that [portfolio] a threat to me or something? I don't give a **** what else you're good at, here you're nothing more than a tester. If you can't find enough bugs there's no reason for me to keep your *** in here"
I thought to myself, what is the point in bugging Superman anyway? These guys barely know how to make football games, the entire Superman test team was convinced the game would bomb on release.. And I was right! :)
So they put me in a corner to test madden, on a PAL gamecube, with a b/w tv to see if I would quit. [Of course, how am I going to bug a game I have 0% knowledge of?]
I tried my best, till they literally took my badge, and escorted me out the building to my car, as if I were a criminal.

You don't PLAY games all day... I'm guessing you're not a tester otherwise you wouldn't be saying that. I would rather bathe old people than be a tester again at tiburon. I don't know how it is in other companies... Hopefully, its not as bad.

If you like doing stuff like playing the same level, over and over again, 14 hours a day for a week while writing detailed reports about it and getting yelled at... then yeah, I guess being a tester would be a pretty awesome job.
