You missed out the Apple Pippin.
Making a presentation about worst consoles ever and leaving out Apple Pippin is like making a list of 10 worst computer software and forgeting to mention Microsoft bob.
Apple Pippin
Year: 1995 (nobody cares, but i had to mention it)
Culprit: Apple
US launch price: $599 (it's apple)
What it would cost today (based on inflation): Who bought it in the first place, in order to be able to sell it??
Did you know that apple tried once it's luck in game consoles? Ten yeas ago it spawned a console named Pippin. As in the beloved CD-I, the Pippin also suffered from the "double identity" crisis, since nobody could tell if this thing was a console or a tv computer. Much like philips, it was also an example of a company getting into a business it had no clue of. Anyway, the pipin offered a weak power pc 66mhz processor and an awfull graphics subsystem. It also could connect to the net (don't think anything about web and email though), through a substandard 14.4 kbit/s modem, so that it could justify it's "computer" titile. Games? Nothing mentionworthy! Only some bangai titles, you didn't want to play with. Ii really wonder why they didn't ported all those thousands of magnificent titles for mac os (that last was irony, ofcourse). Concluding, it was one more overpriced, underpowered, and lacking of thirdparty support product of apple of the mid 90s, among the others. But at least, you would get some apple design with the machine, right? Wrong!

In my opinion, The Flimsy, defective plastic that barely held the first DS together (temporarily) could be considered #10 1/2 on the list. Just the thought of the one gaming company more popular than Jesus shipping the most anticipated hand-held with a cheap design is almost blasphemy. Shouldn't a hand held be more durable then that? I mean, its sole purpose is for on-the-go gaming. I know at least half a dozen people who own two half's of a usless would be gaming messiah. At least Nintendo remedied the problem quickly, and it has kick ass games, so...Maybe it could be like #11 on this list of total crap.

Ooh, that's a good one. The Pippin was on my original short list - but then while I was researching the article, I found out about the Studio II. I mean, come on, a console that was considered awful even by the low standards of 1977? How could I NOT include that? Something had to go to let it in, though, and I figured readers would miss the Pippin the least.
(As for the other things the rest of you haven't heard of, well, I'd say your not having heard of them is part of what makes them terrible, wouldn't you?)
Couple things, though - the culprits behind the Pippin were actually Apple and Bandai; Apple designed it, Bandai marketed and sold it. And the fact that the Pippin got a Marathon (Bungie's pre-Halo shooter) game is kind of worth mentioning, even if it's not worth playing.
Also, the "what it would cost today" category is what the launch price would translate to in today's dollars - not what you can get for it on eBay. So that would be... $829.64. Otherwise, good work.

From a hardware standpoint. The Xbox 360. It really should have had a mass recall. 2+ years of rrod and the new models are still getting them. M$ doesnt know how to fix it apparently.

Most of these consoles were before my time (I was born in 1989) and I am glad I didn't have to suffer through their awesomeness, but a few caught my attention like the Virtual Boy (which is surprisingly worth more today than in 1995; probably as a novelty because no one likes permanent blindness), the Nuon, and the N-Gage.
You could make a claim about the Sega Dreamcast. For as revolutionary as it was it couldn't hold its own against Sony. The Dreamcast was equal to the PS2 in graphics and game play, but it's failure wasn't anything more than incredible...

You know what's great? I petitioned to have Dreamcast on this list. I know it's been the recipient of the internet's undying love for years, but the truth is that system was a pile of junk. Here's why:
9/9/99 - Dreamcast launches in the US. Everyone freaks out over Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur and NFL 2K. They look and sound worlds better than the current favorites (N64 and PSone). System sells great due to these fantastic games, plus with awesome arcade ports like Marvel vs Capcom and Hydro Thunder, DC plowed through its first Christmas with ease. I was working at Toys R Us at the time (payin' the college bills!) and people were calling every single day about Dreamcast. I was convinced - this system was going to be Sega's comeback.
10/2000 PlayStation 2 launches and absolutely no one asks about Dreamcast again where I work. It literally died in one day. And what did we see for the next year, from 10/2000 to 10/2001? A bunch of junk, that's what. As wonderful as its first year was, the rest of its life was embarrassing and devoid of AAA games. Meanwhile PS2 gets Tekken Tag, FFX, Smuggler's Run, MGS2 and whatever else came out in that same time period. Against DC games like Hidden and Dangerous, Floigian Bros.(or whatever), Samba de Amigo, Slave Zero, Incoming, Expendable blah blah blah there just wasn't anything worth freaking out over. MvC2 was the last game I gave two craps about, and that was even before PS2 launched.
I still can't figure out why people cling to this idea that DC is some beautiful, misunderstood, "didn't get a fair shake" console. It was a half step that GameCube and Xbox buried the moment they arrived in 11/2001. Like I said, I loved the first year, (apparently so did everyone else), but after PS2 developers left, consumers left, and then Sega left. Get over it.
I admired the string of weirdness on DC, stuff like Bangai-O and Giga Wing and Space Channel 5, but none of those things are going to move hardware. Super niche-y. Fun, yes, but not enough to keep a tired system treading water.
I'm actually quite happy to see someone else even DARE saying DC wasn't the best electronics product in the history of the world. Sorry if I come off as overly harsh, but well, that's it. Feel free to disagree.
As for the rest of the list, great read IMO. I remember Jaguar buzz hitting quite a high in '94 and then actually playing it. Talk about crappy!

To temper that a bit, here are DC games that, despite my feelings for the hardware, I think every gamer should play (other than the good ones I listed):
Grandia II Chu Chu Rocket Skies of Arcadia Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (best version at the time, soon to be Xbox) Jet Grind Radio Shadow Man (best version of the pretty-ok game)
The saddest part? All of those are available on other systems!
You can add Shenmue to that list if need be. I couldn't stand it, but I understand why a lot people loved it.

How do you not include arcade perfect ports of the Street Fighter 3 series?

Yeah Brett! If that is your real name... The 'Cast also had some wonderful racing games you seem intent to ignore. Rush and Rally, baby!
I'd also tout Quake and Typing of the Dead if I wasn't the lone asshole in the entire universe to purchase the the DC's mouse and keyboard.

San Francisco Rush 2049 - came out in 2000 Sega Rally - came out in 1999 Street Fighter III Double Impact - 2000 Street Fighter III Third Strike - 2000
All within the first year time period that I mentioned. Only Typing of the Dead came out after, in 2001. And yes it's a fun game, but to the average buyer it looked ridiculous. Part of the "weird" releases that were fun but won't move hardware.

Ah ha, Elston! What makes a console great is the games, not the "hardware it pushes." If that were the case, the Game Gear could have come standard with cocaine and handjobs, and been a roaring success.
And I hope you feel better, Butter-britches.

I've never had a Dreamcast, but still plan on buying one. Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Record of Lodoss War, Outtrigger, Timestalkers, Seventh Cross, Jet Grind Radio...all that good stuff. Oh yeah, the system is definitely the child of multiple misfortunes. Does it deserve to be in the un-pantheon of crap like the Virtual Boy? Not really.

What about the Sega Game Gear? I mean i had one, and all the games pretty much sucked, oh and it ate 6 AA batteries in about 2 hours. What a shitty hand held seriously.

Agreed, the Game Gear sucks on toast.
And Mikel, never question the love between two editors.
