Regarding Windows 7

Alright, so I have almost no knowledge of computers, I can get on the internet and that's pretty much it. So what I was wondering, is Windows 7 worth it right now or should I wait. I'm currently running Vista Home Premium, and I was thinking about getting the same for Windows 7. Should I stick to basic, or go for Premium?

I like it and think it is better than Vista. You won't notice a performance increase in games or other application but the user interface is faster and more useful in my opinion.

If you've been happy with Vista it probably not worth it unless you can find it on sale or something.

On the other hand, if you are disappointed with Vista go for it and get Windows 7.

To answer your final question, Windows 7 comes in three version that you can actually buy. Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate. You'd be fine with Premium.

Thanks for the information. I just found out that Microsoft is selling Windows 7 online for $30 for Home Premium and $40 for Proffessional, as a student discount. I qualify or this student discount, so I think I'll be gtting it here.

I have Premium, so I'm not really sure about the differences in the versions...

It's supposed to be more stable than Vista, though I wasn't one of those people that found Vista to be unstable. I still feel like Apple is ******* with Windows users because iTunes is still the only application that has caused any problems. (But not a CPU crash but the program crashed twice in the first week of me using Windows 7) iTunes always seems to have stability issues with Windows, at least for me.

The big upgrade is actually the media player. It supports most file types without downloading the K-lite codec pack. It's also giving iTunes a run for it's money in that it has an improved interface and organizes all your media in a much more intuitive manner than it did before.
Playlists are easier to make, and it starts up faster than iTunes. IMO, the only thing iTunes does better now is Genius and podcasts.

Since it's so new, it's hard to say if it's more stable or secure, but the reviews say that. There's somethings I don't like about it, but, that's more because I'm used to less intuitive user interfaces. But, that's my nerdrage. I can recognize that it actually is a better, more intuitive system for users who don't know as much about computers as I do.
There's a lot of borrowing from Mac OSX, and it's for the better.

Strictly speaking, I don't think you'll see a huge performance boost from many programs though.

well the big difference between premium and professional/ultimate is that professional/ultimate has something called XP mode to run older programs on your rig which is very nice if your running older programs

Any idea how well XP Mode works for games? I imagine it isn't spectacular because XP Mode is basically a virtual machine unless there are driver hooks, or 3d acceleration or something.

STOP! AT HALT! DON'T DO IT! Just recently switched from Vista to 7. Yes by all means 7 is a much better OS, but trying to make the transition on one machine sucks. It's really better to just get a new machine with Windows 7 already on it. It was such a hassle having to uninstall tons of programs, then reinstalling them. It also messed up my video card and left a bunch of programs unusable like my beloved Fallout Trilogy.

Well I just got my laptop last year, so I'm definately not shelling out another $800 when I have a perfectly good machine still. Also, I don't really have any programs, other than Firefox, iTunes, and a few other little things. But, I might not be making the switch right now because I'm told that 7 doesn't come with Microsoft Works Word Processor. Does anyone know a way to get around this? Is there someway I can convert all my files when I import them back?(This is a general question btw, any help would be appreciated).

Basically you need to convert all your files to either .doc or .rtf

As a replacement to Works, I suggest Open Office, free and fairly comparable to Microsoft Word

Thanks. I already have Microsoft Office 2007, I just used Word Processor for all my documents because I preferred it. But what I did find was that if I open Word, and select works documents to open, it lets me open all my documents as Word Documents. Should I save them as a .doc or will it work like this after I switch over to Windows 7?

Ya I just ended up saving everything as a word document, it didn't take too long and I wanted to be sure I had them.
