Attaching an x-box controller to a pc?

As a side not i have a windows pc.
How do you conect your x-box controller to a pc? I have it attacted through my USB port but it popes up saying i have to have the correct driver or something. I was just wondering if their is a download out their that can allow me to just plug it in and use it. All help is appreciated.

Well im not sure about connecting it with a wire, but I have a wireless adapter for my PC which allows me to use the 360 controllers, it was only about $15-20
|

yeah i have a wireless and i have a cord for it but was mainly looking for a download cause it should work with the right driver i just cant find one but thanks anyways.
