Not sure if anyone else has heard of him or not, but I URGE any and all anime fans/otakus to check out his work...

He's absolutely phenomenal and while his films/OVA's can be a bit on the depressing/sad side, they're fuckin' incredible...Incredibly well animated and the soundtracks are some of the best music I've ever heard in an anime...And I've heard A LOT of music in anime...
A recurring theme in his films is love...And it's really well done and conveyed, he helps you really feel for the relationship(s) and the characters in said relationship(s)...I found myself on the verge of tears while watching 5 Centimeters Per Second and Voices from a Distant Planet...

Some of the Japanese media claim him to be the next Miyazaki (which he vehemently denies) so that HAS to say something...

If you're intrigued I would start with "Voices of a Distant Star," and then "5 Centimeters Per Second"...Two phenomenal films worth your time...Do it, DO IT NAOW!!

Damn straight!!

He is officially one of my absolute favorite directors...Although I have only seen his three "big" works, I can safely say, I loved it all immensely...
I will follow this man for the rest of my animu watching days...Which hopefully will be a long, long time!!

Thanks for posting this, I probably would never have gotten around to watching it if you hadn't. The style wasn't my favorite, but it was a pretty sweet story. Also, I feel like it accomplished a lot with such a short time frame.

You're welcome!!

What impresses me the most is the fact that he did it (animation) all by himself on his iMac...The voice acting was done by him/his wife...

Sure the animation isn't the best, but the fact that it was done on such a limited budget and completely independently, it's an incredible feat...

It really it a great OVA...

Nothing to do with Makoto Shinkai, but has anyone ever seen Mind Game? Quite a delicious mind ******* if I do say so myself.

Summary:
"Nishi, an awkward young manga artist in Osaka, has had on longstanding crush on Myon. Thing is, Myon?s got a thing for rugged Ryo. Matters come to a head at her sister Yan?s yakitori restaurant, in the presence of the girl?s dissolute father?who happens to owe a bunch of money to a pair of creepy gangsters, who?ve come to collect. Things get ugly, and Nishi gets killed in a brutal, graphic fashion. End of the story? No way, that?s just the start. Pulling a fast one on God (in all his/her/its infinite manifestations), Nishi hightails it back to Earth, where he replays the crime to his advantage, steals a car and grabs the girls. Under a hail of yakuza gunfire, he bails off a bridge?and into the mouth of a whale. There, he and his two female companions encounter a tenacious and lively old man who has set up camp in the beast?s belly, longing to someday return to human company on dry land. With no immediate exit available, the quartet make do?fishing, fighting, making love, weaving tales of strange happenings on faraway planets and dreaming of life in the real world."
