Five reasons we already love Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver

New Pokedex

As with previous installments in the series, the Pokedex has been given some extra polish. The new Pokedex looks a lot slicker, and includes vital information on where, and when you can catch the missing Pokemon that have been crafty enough to escape enslavement and your tyrannical fist. HG&SS also incorporates some tweaks into the Johto Pokedex to reflect changes since the original Gold and Silver; for example, happiness and other special evolution Pokemon are represented. Fortunately the game also includes a large number of Pokemon from the original GB and GBA games in order to cut back on having to transfer Pokemon from the ancient cartridges lurking in that box in your parent’s attic. As in previous games, Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokemon can be caught after beating the Elite Four and completing the National Pokedex. Rumor has it even starter Pokemon like Squirtle and Mudkip can be acquired, albeit much later in the game.

The Pokewalker

What’s certainly the biggest leap forward for the Pokemon series is the Pokewalker. This little pedometer is way more than some gimmick that’ll quickly find itself rotting in the closet with your old EyeToy and N64 rumble packs – it’s an extension of the game. The Pokewalker does a slew of things, but most important is its ability to level your Pokemon on the go. We didn’t get to go for a hike with the thing, so it’s hard to say exactly how long it will take to level one, though lower level Pokemon will certainly level faster. Even so, Pokemon chosen to be carried around with you in the Pokewalker get a substantial happiness bonus from being in your pocket. Don’t ask.

For each step you take the game tracks your progress with Watts, a sort of currency that allows you to do a number of things, primarily unlocking new areas, like forests and beaches, for capturing Pokemon. That’s right, you can capture Pokemon on the Pokewalker. The Pokewalker includes a minigame similar to the safari zone where your Pokemon battles with a wild one but with limited choices like “Attack” and “Throw ball.”  Your Pokemon can also douse for items, searching in the grass for full heals, potions and other things. Connecting the Pokewalker to the DS is a simple, quick and easy process as the IR sensor is built into the DS cartridge, so there’s no need to lug a chunky dongle, or oversized game around with you.

It should also go without saying that the Pokewalker brings with it a little sense of childlike (or age appropriate) glee, knowing that you get to carry your favorite Pokemon around with you just like the trainer in the game. Just don’t get carried away and expect Hitmonchan to actually pop out of the Pokewalker when you throw it at that mugger on the train.

Dammit! That's yet ANOTHER game I want to buy this year. But seriously, now I'm even more excited for it than before.

the johto pokemon were the best pokemon games so far, so plus a few of the DPP stuff will be awesome. i might actually get this, even if i am a bit old for it Xp

My excitement for these games is now officially renewed. Having all 497 Pokemon be able to follow you is an awesome little Easter egg/Blissey acquirement method. I wish you could ride on the bigger ones though. And the PokeWalker is cool, I could take it with me walking the dogs and level up my Typhlosion... Heh heh. reCaptcha: nicklas away? Is it Christmas again already?
  • secretsearcher - February 4, 2010 11:08 p.m.

they actually took the time to animate all of the pokemon, so each one could follow you? that's pretty sick. Lucario is my favorite Poke'mon of all time, so if I could have it follow me around I would just about die of happiness.

once this game comes out i will crush anyone of you here if you send me your friend codes
  • NanoElite666 - February 4, 2010 8:13 p.m.

The original Gold/Silver/Crystal was by far my favorite set of the Pokemon games, as I think they were (and still are) the most ambitious ones in the series so far. Definitely looking forward to this release.

Totally agree with TRAVthe3RD And I might need to find a cheap DS for this game, I never got the chance to play the original Gold or Silver so it'll be like a new game for me. Oh how I crave such a game.
  • GamesRadarMichaelGrimm - February 4, 2010 5:24 p.m.

@ Romination Thanks, I plan on jumping on the podcast sometime soon! @TRAVthe3RD Agreed
  • reveffect - February 4, 2010 4:19 p.m.

i cant wait for this to come out. the first one i played was yellow and then i got silver which wont keep any of my saves for some reason. i would keep my ds running on for as long as possible by constantly recharging it when the battery was low just to keep my game going but when i forgot to charge it one day i managed to pull off a darth vader noooooooo. the last one i played was diamond on my lil sisters ds and she wouldnt let me finish. so i will definatly be getting a ds just for this.
  • TRAVthe3RD - February 4, 2010 2:37 p.m.

one thing the pokemon series is sorely lacking is customizable trainers.. i know they are only tiny sprite but it would be awesome if you could have different clothes or colours.. im sick of the stock standard boy and girl trainer they lazily give you every time
  • GoldenMe - February 4, 2010 5:26 a.m.

"All 497 Pokemon will be able to follow you now." *Excited shriek* Let's go, Gardevoir, Gallade, Lucario, Lopunny, Froslass, Drifblim!
  • GameManiac - February 4, 2010 4:05 a.m.

Oh! I forgot to mention that it could possibly "re-invent" the series (but not much is known about it...) ...*sigh*... (At least I'm patient and naturally nonchalant.)
  • GameManiac - February 4, 2010 4 a.m.

With Pokemon now following you around like pets, it's only a matter of time (maybe a few dozen years) until holograms pets exists and Nintendo uses it with their Pokemon franchise. ... Sweet! ;D (Anyway, back to this article...) I was already going to get SoulSilver the instant it was announced (being the Pokefan that I am). Nintendo recently announced a new Pokemon RPG that COULD be 5th generation to be released in Japan at the end of 2010. I wonder if Pokeradar (or whatever it's called since it's been SO LONG!!) will revive itself?
  • Cwf2008 - February 4, 2010 3:20 a.m.

Pokewalker eh? Why do i get the feeling that the reason that person is mugging you on the train is because of it...anyway im looking forward to this game. Can't wait for it to come out.
  • mikeandike76 - February 4, 2010 1:05 a.m.
