Finally... glow in the dark game controllers

Afterglow puts lights into peripherals. Pretty, coloured lights

Words: on April 15, 2010

We've already had joypads with fans in them and joypads with massive keyboards and now we have ones that are lit up with christmas lights. Called Afterglow, they're manufactured by US peripheral company PDP.

Connoisseurs of third-party products may recognise these (we didn't) as they've been around for a while, but these are new and updated and improved. Among other things - like making pretty colour trails as you move them around - they'll enable you to find your controller at night during a power cut.

While every cell in our body is screaming out to be cynical about these little glowing rave pads, we actually think they're kind of cool. Ultimately, the test will be whether they feel good in the hand; as experienced gamers will know, any number of fancy gimmicks doesn't make up for a dodgy D-pad.

So, if PDP want to send us some free ones we'll promise to review them with no hint of sarcasm or facetiousness. We'll even act like they're a new idea. And we definitely won't sell them for profit on eBay.

Currently these controllers are only for sale in the US (priced between $14.99 and $29.99) but we'll let you know if any UK-based retailers decide to stock them.

Do you own any third-party controllers? Are they any good? And do they light up as bright as these? Let us know on FacebookTwitter and in the comments below.

So where do they sell them here in the US? Just any store that sells videogame stuff?

I have a pair ones like these for PS2, they are fun but can get a little annoying.

Seabread has a really good point...

Anyway, I've always thought controllers with translucent cases like these were kind of ugly. I guess it's the only way to get them to glow like that.

@ Modroneman, I don't think that the thumb-stick placement has caused years of fan-hate. If that were the case, these controllers would be capable of world peace. World peace! lol j/k with you.

They look pretty cool, but my experience with 3rd party controllers has been pretty iffy. Surprisingly though, the Wii nunchuk suits itself well for 3rd party replacements. If they had a wireless one, I'd probably consider getting it, if only to wave it around in the dark.

Isn't the left joystick placement on the PS3 controller, the reason most PS3 owners hate the 360? I've gotten so used to the 360 controller, that when I do get a PS3, I will have to pick up this joypad!

"...they'll enable you to find your controller at night during a power cut."

so? if there's a power cut you wont be able to use the console anyway so what's the point?

Nunchuk...What's the Wiimote that goes with it look like?

Every third party controller that wasn't a Fighting Stick has always sucked, imo.

These actually look quite good. I like the PS3 one best. I hope they'll come to the UK as i'd probably buy one. :P. It looks kinda like one of the old mad catz PS2 controllers you could get so it should be an alright controller. :).
