11) Judge Bergan
Both Bergan and his cadre of lesser Judges are immune to Fire. Dispatch his backup with high-powered magic like Thundara, then prepare for a thorough drubbing at Bergan’s hands. He can inflict 500-600 damage a hit with his twin swords, and he often strikes multiple times in a round. Set up Gambits to throw out Cura or Curaga the moment any character hits 50% HP or less, and keep all your active characters Protected.
12) Mandragora Prince, Pumpkin Star, Topstalk, Onion Queen, Alraune King
This is easily the most annoying fight in the game, as it’s meant to take advantage of certain flaws in the Gambit system. Turn all of them off when this battle starts, then go stand in a corner of the room buffing your crew up. When one of the bosses gets curious, attack with two of your characters while the third stands ready with Esuna or similar countermeasures. The key is to isolate and destroy each boss in turn.
Ahriman casts spells like Toxify, Thundara, and Doom, and occasionally attempts to Confuse a single character with Phantasmal Gaze. Once you’ve inflicted 50% damage, Ahriman will augment his repertoire with Immobilizega and Maser Eye. Infrequently, he’ll also teleport away and summon one or more duplicates of himself. Should he do so, set one character on each duplicate, or blast the lot with an area-effect spell.
14) Dr. Cid
As with Mateus, Cid is not as much of a problem as his companions are. He begins the battle with a quartet of Rooks in tow. Rooks can cast buffs, steal your MP, and prevent you from damaging Cid. They’re also usually Reflective, which is a problem. If you have an Opal Ring, equip it on your main offensive caster and blast the Rooks into next Tuesday. Otherwise, open the battle with a chain of Quickenings, then destroy the survivors with melee attacks. Easy, no?
On his own, Cid is armed with a large gun, and like all guns, it ignores a character’s Defense. If he begins to walk determinedly towards the door of the room, he’s about to cut loose with a huge cannon blast called Tokamak. Heal and renew buffs accordingly.
