FIFA franchise celebrates 100 million sales, gives you a free gift

Sound the vuvuzelas!

Spurred by huge sales during the World Cup this year, EA's series of FIFA games have now collectively sold more than 100 million copies. And to celebrate, every PS3 and Xbox 360 owner can now get a piece of DLC for free.

The FIFA 11 Ultimate Team online DLC is available on both systems' digital distribution stores as a free download. It's the same kind of add-on that previous FIFA games charged $5 for.

The Ultimate Team DLC lets gamers trade, buy, and sell their team's players with other gamers online, allowing them to create the killer team and pit them in competitions with people all over the world. It also has connectivity with a special Ultimate Team web app, linked to the console game directly.

FIFA is the best-selling sports video game franchise of all time, all around the world. The most recent entry was released in 51 countries and translated into 18 different languages.

"Few videogame franchises ever reach the 100 million units mark and we have millions of fans around the world to thank for helping us to this milestone," said EA Sports VP Matt Bilbey.

On top of reaching 100 million sales, FIFA Soccer 11 itself became the fastest-selling sports game ever. It sold 2.6 million copies in just five days, with total salesup 20% over last year's version.
