While the hoopla around Harry Potter was frothing away, writer Stephanie Meyer was quietly cooking up her own tale of fantasy, romance and adventure, and her Twilight series has quickly become a Potter-challenging phenomenon of its own.

Catherine Hardwicke is busy shooting the film adaptation of the first book, which will find Kristen Stewart’s lonely Bella moving to a new town to live with her dad. At school, she meets the mysterious, sexy and troubled Edward Cullen, who is good-looking, moody and very pale. He keeps trying to push her away, and with good reason – he’s a vampire. But does Bella reach for the cross and the garlic undies? Well, no. Not only because it would be a short film, but also because crosses don’t work in Meyers’ universe. As for garlic undies?
