Fallout 3

A huge, varied, epic, ambitious masterpiece

Words: on October 28, 2008

Nobody knows who dropped the first bomb, and nobody cares. 200 years have passed since a nuclear war between the U.S. and China reduced the planet to cinders, and humanity has only one concern: survival. The fallout not only destroyed civilisation, but twisted and distorted it. Humans mutated into feral monsters, water and plants were irradiated and animals grew in ferocity. But for you, life is peachy. For the past 19 years you’ve been living with your dad in Vault 101, a nuclear fallout shelter buried deep underground on the outskirts of Washington DC.

Fallout’s one of the biggest, deepest RPGs out there. Not a role-playing fan? It’s also a brutal and accomplished FPS. It tells an incredible story across 100+ hours, but it’s also packed with Call of Duty-style set-pieces. As we type, we’re 29 hours in and have finished the main story, but the volume of worthy remaining side quests is boggling. It’s a measure of Fallout’s depth that it begins with your birth – you emerge from the womb in first-person view, with squealing and crying that you control yourself. Your vision’s blurred, but you can just about see your dad (Liam Neeson), his face obscured by a surgical mask. “Let’s see what you’ll look like when you’re all grown up”, he whispers as a nearby monitor flickers to life, displaying the game’s character creation tool.

The editor is flexible, but no matter how much you adjust the sliders your character will always look vaguely the same; handsome, slim and youthful – mercifully, your appearance has no bearing on the plot. It’s in your character’s stats and abilities that the depth of customisation lies. As you go through your youth and teenage years, you’ll shape your character via a series of clever interactive ‘minigames’. In one you flick through a toddler’s book called ‘You’re SPECIAL!’ which determines your core stats: strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck. In another, you take an exam called the GOAT (Generalised Occupational Aptitude Test) that judges how good you’ll be at things like sneaking, using weapons, picking locks and bartering with merchants.

You’ll spend about an hour and a half in Vault 101, making friends, fighting bullies, struggling with moral decisions and completing tutorials. We won’t say exactly what happens as it’s one of the most compelling, intriguing parts of the game, but eventually you leave the confines of your lead-lined tomb and emerge blinking into the outside world. This is where Fallout 3 really begins. You’ll prickle with relief at escaping the claustrophobia of the Vault – the sun’s blinding – only for icy trepidation to take hold as your eyes adjust to the numbing desolation outside. This isn’t a game of rich forests, and lush spires, but cruel, brown open wasteland and haunting symbols of times past.

I just got this game and it is amazing. it is as good, and might even be better than oblivion. though im pretty sure there are WAY less weapons. and since you cant fast travel to all cities, only places you've discovered, that makes travel a pain. the only excuse is that its the first time you've ever left the vault. but if you have a pip-boy with a map. that shouldn't be a problem.

isnt this a review of the ps3 version? i mean since its written from a member of psm it must be but im quite certain im under the pc tab on this site..... and since this review is a 9 and doesnt state the horrible amount of bugs on the pc version ( alot of people cant even start the game without it crashing) then it surely isnt a review of the pc version of fallout 3. keep this crap under the right tabs please.

Ok.. I am 6 hours into the game... Awesome! All that I hoped for and more... but... ARRGGG WTF is with this voice acting?? Some are outstanding, while others make me want to put a gun to my temple. The "Moira" shopkeeper in Megaton F*&%ing drives me crazy. I'd rather drill a screw in my brain then listen to her talk. Anybody else know what I am talking about? She has got to be the most annoying voice actor i have ever heard.. Arggg! Anyone got any extra Mentats? I need to boast my tolerance for horrible voice acting.

This has got to be one of the worst reviews I've ever read. Maybe you could show a shred of professionalism (I assume you get paid for this) and mention at the beginning that the review will consist of a series of brief statements concerning the various features of the game followed by several, detailed pages of spoilers. It is possible to offer up a critic of a work without resorting to a detailed summary. Nice work.

One of the reasons I love PC Gamer reviews is because you guys never make it easy to get a 10 out of 10, but I really think you were a bit too nit picky on this one. This game is one of the best I've ever played, and more engrossing and epic the 2nd or 3rd time through. Things like the kids voices being all the same, seriously? What about Halflife 1? What about great T.V. shows like South Park or even The Simpsons? Great shows, minimal voice actors. Which brings me to my point that vocal variety may bring more realism but it's also expensive and completely unnecessary. Gameplay, depth, freedom of choice, and environment are the focus (as it should be in a role playing game) and this game delivers it in spades. If you take into account the hours of play this game gives you for the dollars it costs to get you'd be a fool if you didn't grab it. If

Same review as XBOX 360. Updated pictures for PC Graphics. I do have to say, this game is amazing. What would be 1 or 2 hours of playing for me (I usually play that much before getting bored with a game) turns into 6 hours and then I realize it's 2am. I love this game, and it's one of the few games I've played that keep me playing for hours and hours on end.

YO! Dude! "TheWebSinger", and other boneheads who go to retail stores to buy games... Don't travel hours for the game. "Direct2Drive" or "Steam" it! The only smart way to buy games now! (unless of course you plan on playing the console versions....sheesh!.. Console for non-sports games hahahahh! Silly, just plain silly)

escuse me czp 420 but this game isn't very demanding.dude u canrun it with 1gb ram geforce7300gs on pentium 4 without any problems.u just have to keep the graphics at its minimum. And i love the game.Yeah it is a bit to big but thats the fun o rpg adventure.U need to do a lot of exploring. And the game never ends.U can keep playing it for months.I have just finished the main story and didn't do all the side quest cause it would take me years to finish. But it's a very good game.Good shooting sistem.Good variety of enemies.Good story line.Amazing grapdics.I luv'd it.i am waiting for the next fall out to arrive. For adventure lovers i would highly recommend this game.

I hate Moira. She always sounds like a retarded Canadian woman who's talking to a 5 year old.
