F3AR and other games which swap letters for numbers

Thief 4

The only artwork for Thief 4 that exists is this logo. It must have posed its creator something of a headache. Why else would they have replaced the 'e' with a 4? At least a 3 looks like a backwards 'E'. Did no-one think of this when they were signing off the logo?

Wipeout 3

For anyone who remembers the early days of PlayStation when it was still aimed at stoners and clubbers, Sony used to get shithot designers like The Designers Republic to work on Wipeout for them. Although, to be honest, if finding a futuristic font on FreeFonts.com and replacing the 'e' with a '3' makes you a shithot designer, we're in the wrong job.

Driv3r

This was probably the first time we were genuinely aggrieved at the use of a '3' instead of an 'e'. Mainly because it made it such a pain in the ass to spell-check any articles that used the word Driv3r. And the game was a bit rubbish. Ha ha, we can say that now and nobody gives a crap.

Shadowman: 2econd Coming

Say it with us, as it's written. Two-econd coming. Phonetically that's all wrong. A '2' simply doesn't look like an S unless you're foolish enough to buy a personalised numberplate that's supposed to say 'Steve’s' but reads 2T3 UES.

1nsane

Or, as we never called it, when we never asked for it in the shop: onesane.

Any we've missed/deliberately forgotten?

The Tony Hawk's Americ*n Wasteland box was pretty quarter-assed (nope, not even half-assed), about as quarter-assed as the game.

I remember my friend and I thinking Driver 3 was pronounced "Driv-3-er". We were dumb.

The worst example I recall is from the movie Thir13en Ghosts. What.

why would they name it with numbers anyway just put a number behind the orignal title or change the title its just that easy

Does anyone remember that old movie "That Thing You Do" where the band named themselves the Oneders (as in 'Wonders') and everyone pronounced it "own-eeders"? Good flick.

@ninjadevbear: I have to defend.(the first) Shadow Man. That game had great sound design for the time. Very creepy background sound, especially the prison level. My memories wouldn't lie! Mmmmmm...

"deliberately forgotten?" For some reason, I think this is directed at Left 4 Dead because you didn't want to bash on Valve :P
  • Tommykrem - April 12, 2010 3:56 p.m.

The moment someone uses a number instead of a letter, I can't take the game seriously, and the quality assurance drops. I mean, what crazy fish sat down and thought out Left 4 Dead 2. Is he a fan of Hitchiker's Guide to the galaxy, or was he obsessed with ruining great games!?
  • The_Author - April 12, 2010 3:44 p.m.

What about the newest Metal Gear... All the Ls and even the 4 is an upside down 7!
  • OnyxOblivion - April 12, 2010 2:48 p.m.

I'm gonna get F.E.A.R. 3 launch day. I loved all of them. Even the much hated 2.
  • TriggerHappyMongoose - April 12, 2010 2:29 p.m.

Engage facepalm. I'm still excited for F.3.A.R. though. Hopefully they change the title before release. A facepalm worthy name isn't enough from keeping me from playing it if it's good.
  • Bloodstorm - April 12, 2010 1:58 p.m.

I rolled my eyes when I saw F.3.A.R. This isn't the 90's anymore. Numbers replacing letters isn't cool, in fact, I believe it means you are the complete opposite of cool.
  • omnilion - April 12, 2010 1:30 p.m.

I can't wait for F.E.4.R.... Or now that Thief 4 has done it, should it be F.4.A.R?
