OMFG they must be able to tell the future, seriously this is going to happen eventually, unless of course we all kill each other before we find another sentient species.
This article really makes you think. Humanity can be a really scary thing. It's kind of sad at how accurate this article is on human behavior towards different customs, life styles, and other intelligent life forms. I guess it is human nature to fear the unknown, and with fear usually comes violence. Not knowing what might happen is scary and it can cause you to destroy that potential threat as quickly as possible to eliminate the chance of you being harmed from it. I wish that weren't the case but we can't really help it. I'll probably never look at a Locust the same way again.
If this article is read by the game disigners i could see them coming up with a Gears Of War from the Locust point of view.
GEARS OF WAR: The RAW WAR
Description:
They invaded our planet, destroyed our resources, and killed our people. Time to fight back! It is your turn to write history from where it started. Lead the Locusts to VICTORY as plow through the humans only to restor pease on Sera
I think the solution to most of these problems, such as imperialism, raping the environment, and only seeing the outside of a being, is progressive education. Teach the people to love everything for what it is and maybe we won't be so goddamn angry all the time and nuke ourselves to oblivion.
A good article.
And no, the Nazis were not Marxist. Leon Trotsky was Marxist, and knew that communism/socialism could never truly exist without democracy. Hitler was a fascist through and through, where the government controls everything for the "greater good" and nationalism is taken to an extreme.
I don't think that the human inhabitants of Sera came from Earth. Their technology honestly comes off as way too primitive for that to be so. If you have the technology to travel to and inhabit a planet within another system, why would you be fighting enemies with machine guns and grenades? Even our armies have more advanced military tech. If Serans really are from Earth their technology should be advanced enough to just completely destroy the Locusts.
I think Sera is supposed to just be an alternate take on Earth; to have many similarities to our planet - enough to make the setting seem familiar - but its own history.
See, after reading this article and having finish GOW's campaign for the 900th time (yeah, is THAT good to me), it makes me question if that's why the female voice at the end says "they do not understand why we cannot loose this war"? You guys think that's what the producers and story writers have in mind for a third game? Makes an kick ass storyline for a movie to me.
Thank you for bringing this to light to a wider audience. I've been saying ever since Gears 1 came out that it does actually have a story, that it's somewhat analogous to the situation with America right now, even - the reason the Locust were able to gain such a foothold originally was before they emerged, man was warring among one another to control deposits of Imulsion ("all dat juice"), which was used as fuel for everything. Sound familiar?
Maybe the Imulsion is integral to the Locust's survival, which is what triggered their attack. It's not as black-and-white as most people believe, but this is a failing on the game's part, not the audience. If Gears had a better narrative woven into it then maybe it would be more appreciated, rather than buried in an art book in an edition not even half of the audience purchased.
Awesome article, there should be more like this revealing backstories to random games where the narrative was too vague.
@ Fancy rat: Neo-Hitler? that is the most frightening combination i've ever heard. I'm picturing Keanu Reeves with a hilter 'stauche and brown army overalls, dodging bullets in slowmo. The world wouldn't stand a chance :P
I totally dont agree with this at all. if the locust didnt like what we were doing they could have just came up and talked to us instead of blowing crap up shooting people and stuff.
Think about it Jake, if you were watching a civilization war amongst itself for over a MILLENIA, A THOUSAND YEARS, would you think they could be talked to? And I think it is a colony Eleo, after all they did use orbital fire to raze 90% of the planet after the initial Locust attacks.
