Why WoW players should switch to WAR

It's time to leave the sunny plains of Azeroth for the bloody fields in Warhammer Online

Words: Tyler Nagata, GamesRadar US

Grinding. Grinding. Grinding. Everyone complains about how killing enemies ad nauseam in MMOs sucks. WAR has its fair share of grinding, but it never feels like a grind. Part of it has to do with the way the game cuts out all the unnecessary time sinks.

You'll never find yourself sitting in a field of corpses, waiting for more enemies so you can try to get that fifth hunk of wolf meat to drop. Instead, WAR keeps things fast-paced with a quick respawn rate so you can get your killing done and move on without any unnecessary thumb twiddling.

Death penalties are minor and can be cured by NPC healers in hubs for a low cost. Your health and mana also regenerate quickly after battle, so there's no need for a cooking profession to alleviate downtime between battles.

Above: WAR is the most accessible and hardcore MMO we've played

But the main reason why grinding never feels like a grind in WAR is because everything you do (and we do mean everything), level ups some aspect of your character or contributes to your faction's war efforts. Even when you're just questing on your own, you're still playing an important part in your server's group effort to conquer the other side's capital city. Once that city has been looted, pillaged, and burned to the ground, the server will reset and the epic war will rage on again.

Make no mistake. WoW is awesome it’s not going anywhere. Lord of the Rings: Online is great. And there are elements of Age of Conan that are excellent. But WAR is the best MMO out there right now, and as servers continue to swell with more players it keeps getting better. That's why we've switched to WAR. Anyone who likes fantasy, leveling up, and PvP should consider doing the same. Even if you don't normally like PvP, you will after playing WAR. We simply can't recommend it enough.

You make some really good points. But there are two reasons I'm sticking with WoW for the foreseeable future.

1. All my friends are on WoW. And they're not going to just abandon their 70's and everything they've put time, effort and money into, especially with Lich King on the horizon.

2. I'm not very familiar with the Warhammer storyline, but the orcs and other races of chaos look stereotypically evil to me. I like
WoW's orcs and other horde races because they break that stereotype. There not just savage and brutal cardboard cutouts like most fantasy games.

Ive been playing WAR for a few weeks now, gta say it really is something else, the mechanics theyve implemented make it extremley accesible for mmo players of all ability.

As for "races of chaos look stereotypically evil to me. I like WoW's orcs and other horde races because they break that stereotype"
i'd just like to point out that warhammer has been around since the early 80's and its lore and design is actually responsible for alot of the fatasy "stereotypes" that are around now, 40k even influenced alot of the starcraft design...so to say that warcraft desgins are superior to warhammer is purley contradiction.

I played the beta of this game, and I have to say I was probably one of the best mmorpgs I have ever played, aside from CoH/CoV but maybe it will be my favorite if I get to play the full game.

I quit WOW due to all of the time consuming (and boring) requirements. Maybe I'll actually get back into an MMORPG now that I have seen some extended impressions of WAR.

is there a monthly fee? if so how much?

@phantomboner

So the orcs and such are evil/savage in this? Thank you confirming this.

The orcs and the Chaos are great. If you're interested in the Warhammer universe but don't feel like committing to a new MMO, I would suggest Warhammer 40K Dawn of War. It's an excellent RTS and you can usually find it on sale for about twenty dollars.

ive been having a go at WAR for the last few weeks, trying out most of the classes (destro-side)and i have some mixed feelings about this game...
for starters it looks beautiful, the mobs, the landskapes, the effects, even the animation. the questing is less tedious then WoW in the sense that the objectives are marked on the map and none of that random-drop bs. the BG maps are creative and whilst in them your level is normalized, so your nub ass stands half a chance if your in the 1-11 bracket as a lvl 3.

that said its not without its weaknesses. for what is primerily a PvP game, PvP can be hard to come by. im on a server thats "full" and the queues for the battlegrounds, especially once u get past 11, become mind-bendingly long, and if you wanna pvp past midnight, forgetaboutit.

something else of note is the tons of abilities they pile on each class. enjoy having 30+ diffent buttons to click, and if you like keybinding... well GL with that..
many of said abilities also cross over between classes

all that being said.. it looks/feels/runs better then WoW did at its release

Ps. expect to spend hours banging your head on your keyboard trying to figure out the stat system
and sorry for the wall of text.

oh PPS. no free first month 4 u...so tack $15 onto the retail price

Weird I just saw this after 4 years of WoW and to many characters/alts I was yet pissed off royally again becuase I'm sick and tired of Rogues "stun" killing all my casters and losing 95% of BG rounds. I play alliance. I'm fed the "F" up so instead of play WoW I'm out roaming on the web and found this.

Also, I just won an auction on ebay for a new copy of Warhammer. I infectiously await it.

@Samael

Please read carefully...
"So the orcs and such are evil/savage in this? Thank you confirming this."
At what point did i say otherwise?

"I'm not very familiar with the Warhammer storyline"
No, so i explained it to you, warhammer cant be a stereotype if it in fact defined the genre...
Pentacube  - 1 year 1 month ago
@phantomboner

It kind of makes you look a little foolish to claim that Warhammer created the evil orc concept. I believe that may have spawned well before Warhammer's time...

people who play wow (or any other mmo but mostly wow) are looser ok
...but any1 that played wow for a long time then quit it is a god =D
it was so hard to quit "warcrack" but i did it and that is my biggest accomplishment to do with wow
just think bout it if i didnt spent all that time trying to level my character up and get better items (which is basiclally the aim of the game lol) i probs would of got better grades and have better social life with my m8s and the girls ;P
so my top tip dont get involved in wow and if u are QUIT IT trust me ull get respect
