What's the story with Sonic the Hedgehog 2010?

Sega announces new 2D, HD Sonic, but we're certain something's still hidden underneath

Words: Brett Elston, GamesRadar US

Not surprising: Sega announcing a new Sonic the Hedgehog game. Not surprising: Sega claims this latest entry will be a return to form, finally restoring the ailing franchise to its former glory. Totally surprising: we may actually believe them this time.

Above: Please please please please please

So we know it’s 2D. We know it’s HD (which rules out Wii). We know it’s clearly focused on speed and old-school feel based on the sound effects and specific blue-blur animations. By all accounts, this is it folks, the game we’ve been asking for since the late ‘90s. And you know what? We’re ready to bite… almost.

Above: OH MAN

Straight away, Sega's playing to its lifelong fans, throwing us all the beloved logo from the long-gone Genesis days.

But we have to wonder... is there something Sega's not telling us? This wouldn’t be the first time it pulled the wool over our eyes, as last year it heavily promoted the “classic” levels in Sonic Unleashed and conveniently left out the part about the plodding were-hog until weeks later. Consider that with the game’s supposed codename (Project Needlemouse) and we’re starting to wonder what the “bit” is really going to be.

Will it truly only star Sonic? Will it be a disc or a downloadable XBLA/PSN title, as previously hinted by Sega of America’s VP of Marketing Sean Ratcliffe? Will it be an actual Sonic the Hedgehog 4? We desperately want to know more, and truly think that this time, THIS time things will work.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!

hmm, I'm undecided on this. From reading this article, it makes it sound like a return to form for Sonic. But knowing Sega, they will most likely bog it down with annoying side-characters and useless activities. But as long as it only has Sonic (Tails, Knuckles, and Amy can appear, as long as they stick to the 2-D) fighting Robotnik in a 2-D game, I'll probably buy it.

Pleeeeeeeeeease Sega please please make this be the on ethat fixes sonic. hd high res sprites, hand drawn animation and 2-fuckin'-d gameplay. GIVE IT TO US NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Oh look! Cyberninja is first! Again...
Note how it says it rules out the wii version because it's HD >_>

I'm really not expecting this to be good, like all of the recent good Sonic games. I'm hoping for just a plain HD re-release to be honest.

Well 2D is a step in the right direction but if there is a gimmick, like the goddamn were-hog, this is going straight to hell.

If this game is good, I'll buy a shirt that says, "Yes, I'm a Sonic fan. The last ten years didn't happen."

This better happen the right way, or someone at Sega's getting their scrotum stomped.

Oh come on! I have litterally been a Sonic fan my whole life and now they make potentially the best one yet and they don't put it on the only system I have?!?! I always get new Sonic games, despite what reveiws say, and I always play them through. I always have to give them a chance cuz they might end up being decent. Well. It's settled. I'll have to go out and buy a PS# for this one.

Let's all hope is has nothing to do with this new OFLC rating that popped up recently for Sonic Adventure DX, which could mean it's just a remake in 2D.

Oh no. I don't want it to not be on the Wii.
Sonic 06 was on the ps3 and Xbox only,we all know what happened.
WonsAuto  - 2 months 13 days ago
@Necron Not sure how you'd remake a 3D game into a 2D one?
ThePirateKirby  - 2 months 13 days ago
Please be a sonic 4, or at least good.

If it's good, it's a must buy.

As excited as I am for a decent sonic...the siloette doesnt look like Sonic in the logo...has got me worried
NotBraze  - 2 months 13 days ago
@cronoman66 Compare the sillhouette to the original Sonic the Hedgehog logo right beneath, they're identicle (well, minus the jaggedy pixels)

I'm really hoping Sega's finally pulled their heads out of their butts and realized what made Sonic good in the first place. At this point I'm cautiously optimistic.

Also, if by some universe bending coincidence someone from Sega reads this, LESS IS MORE! We don't need a bazillion characters, we don't need guns or trucks, and we damn well don't need supernatural transformations to our main character. All we want are rings, robots, and running really really fast (although giving Robotnik his old name back would be nice).

i agree with cronoman66... the siloette looks like sonic but his arm is way to skinny

just bare with but i think it looks like a piachus tail

i hate myself 4 writin that but it looks a lot lik that

I used to love the old genesis sonic games. I played them at the age of 4-8. But now i find them really boring. However this trailer does have me a little excited. ill have to check this game out
@cronoman66
i agree the logo does look a bit unlike sonic

I was a little kid when the 2D sonic games were out so i could never beat them, but i really enjoyed them and sonic adventure 2 battle.

Wrong again, GamesRadar.

Despite the HD claims, the Wii is not in fact "ruled out". Research before deciding to add in more of your self-loving fanboy bullshit.

Aside from this trailer (where I didn't see any indication of it), has it been confirmed that it's in HD? And if it is, yeah, that pretty much rules out the Wii - or at least the same version of the game on all consoles.

I'd honestly be fine with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 done in the same style as Megaman 9.
