What games would a noob buy?

A game store. A handful of cash. And three non-gamers.

Words: Matt Cundy, GamesRadar UK

Test subject C: Michelle

Despite claiming to know nothing about the pursuit of virtual merriment, Michelle was probably the most game savvy of our three newbies. Her boyfriend plays PC games and she recently bought the PS3 version of Need for Speed ProStreet at the behest of her brother. Christmas time introduced Michelle to the Wii - she gloved up for some boxing - and she's of the opinion that Nintendo's wizzy-wand console is "pretty good".

The purchase

After hunting fruitlessly for Zelda: Twilight Princess (which she'd heard positive things about), Michelle bounced blindly around the shop and eventually made optimum use of her funds and chose two Wii games - Happy Feet and Spider-Man: Friend or Foe. So what was the attraction with Happy Feet? "Me and my little sister would be able to play it. I love the film, so would be interested to see what the game was like." Fair enough, but what about the Spidey purchase? "Again, I got this because I've seen Spider-Man 3 and I thought the flying things [points to Green Goblin on the cover] look really cool."

Obvious conclusion

Michelle's adventure in a game store started with honourable intentions, but when scuppered by the absence of Zelda she was hastily derailed into making what - in our opinion - were disastrous purchasing choices. Indeed, both Happy Feet and Spider-Man: Friend or Foe are poor advocates for the unbridled joys that gaming can offer. And the fact they're 'kids' games is no excuse for poopiness.

So, like Lucy, Michelle opted for the familiarity offered by comfortably recognisable tie-in titles. But to witness an in-the-bank Zelda sale take such a dramatic wrong turn to Turdsville played melancholy chords on our heart and confirmed what we've always known - without guidance a noob will walk out of a game store with a bagful of licensed pap.

FIRST!! Is what I would shout if I was into that type of thing, but I see it pointless so disregard my opening exclamation. My sister is just like these girls, she'll walk into GAME or Gamestation and just buy something that looks familiar. Nice job.

I totally expected this to be a comedy article, but you guys kept it pretty solid. Make's perfect sense: familiarity. We all go for what we know; two went for licensees, and one went for the closest-to-casual game on the 360.

Veterans like us are just more in the loop; otherwise, we'd do the same thing.

there, isn't that a much nicer comment to read? it's like the punctuation, spelling and coherent sentence wizards came in, stole a bunch of stuff and then just shot it for fun! It's the internetz peeps! if you're gonna do it right, do it right first time! it will be here FOREVER! (unless you delete it. But shhh)

loved the articvle, i made the mistake of buying the simpsons game. on wii. BAD move. ninty has just driven themselves right into the turd heap, and are now gleefully rolling around and mushing it into their faces with each new game. Wii for sale, mint condition, comes with 10 games, one of them guitar hero, with peripheral, recharging station (one that funning works!) two wii remotes with nunchucks, and a steering wheel. anybody? any takers? I might just sell it on ebay...

yeah, back when I was a little noob, I got Grand Theft Auto 3...because I heard it was really violent,so of course I wanted it as a kid, turned out I got lucky because it's a kick ass game. But that's not why I bought the game, I got it because I heard it was violent. Very accurate article.

What? Even I can't give a reasonable explanation of the history of metal gear and I've played them.
