Things gamers don't actually care about

Even though you're supposed to

Words: Paul Ryan, GamesRadar US

What they are: The paper sleeve in-between the plastic wrap on the outside of a new game and the plastic game case. They often have cover art that's exactly the same as the cover art underneath.

Above: This is a picture of what we’re talking about

Why you care: You're a game publisher, and game publishers love putting an extra layer of raised foil around their games before sending them out into the world on their own.

Why we don't: OK, it's not that we don't care about these. It's more like we'd like to not care, but we have to.

Picture this: you’ve just unwrapped a brand new copy of NASCAR 09 and you’re ready to get our race on, to the extreme. But after ripping the plastic off, you still have to remove a cardboard sleeve. Now, with your elevated adrenalin, you could easily just tear it apart, but it looks just like the real cover and the main character is a little shiny. You can’t just go around tearing up shiny things willy-nilly.

It’s the cover’s perceived value that makes it so terrible. You can either put it with the rest of your game cases or put it back around the case for NASCAR 09. If it goes back around the game, you’re only going to have to remove it again to put the game back, when we're done playing – costing valuable seconds of gaming time – and if you don't put it back on the box, it will inevitably end up crushed by a mountain of other game cases, leaving you wracked with guilt for destroying your valuable paper sleeve.

Above: This happens every time

What they are: Miis, Xbox Avatars and Home people who look like you.

Why you care: Because you have to make them.

Why we don’t: It's character creation, but without the game. Character creation is not the fun part of most games.

Plus, we can't figure out what to do with them. We've heard rumors that more games will soon incorporate the li’l guys, and of course, you can already play some Wii games with your little Mii men. All varieties of avatar show up on your dashboard sometimes, and if you sit there looking at them, they're likely to wink at you. So the current theory is that we’re supposed to use them to feel like our consoles are awkwardly hitting on us.

Above: Is this the next step?

Owning a console is about playing games, not about playing dress-up. Sure, it's kind of fun (and very required) to create your little avatar, but their newness wears off quickly when we can't find a purpose for them. We suggest the following: make clothing unlockable through game achievements, and incorporate avatars into matchmaking. After that, we’re not sure what to do with them, but hey, we aren’t the ones who decided avatars are important.

What they are: Sheets of paper bound together so that they can be flipped through. Each sheet has images and text printed on the front and back. The pictures do not move and you will often be required to purchase a Collector’s Edition to get them.

Why you care: You’ve finished the game four times and you still want more. Well, why not? Some of them are actually good (sometimes better than the game).

Why we don’t: This ain’t ReadingRadar! Do you know even know where you are, man?

Nice article, and I agree with many of them but I won't deny my man reason for posting was the captcha I got - http://s160.photobucket.com/albums/t193/Kumo67/?action=view¤t=TheLegend.jpg

Sweet.

i think watching an avatar chainsaw a locust would be... well at least funny. but yh the avatars are as good as useless but lets hope microsoft don't make the wii's mistake and try to incorperate the avatar into every game

A higher difficulty changes the way you play a game. Just try running around out in the open in Call of Duty on the Veteran difficulty, you'll die immediately. In STALKER, you'll get killed by a single bullet which means you need to use guerrilla tactics and cover.

I agree with Nickelback being a shitty band though.

While I disagree with Sir Paul's assessment of retro games, the paper sleeve caption and the lens flare'd 360 are effing hilarious

For the record, the retro arcade remakes entry has caused a Civil War here in our offices. It turns out, not all of us are insane enough to hate super-good things like Galaga Legions and Pac-Man: Championship Edition. Paul's great, but hey - every genius has an off day from time to time.

Good, aside from the retro game thing. I suppose if you hate fun, you might hate some retro games. I admit some of them go too far or are unnecessary, but others justify themselves by being unique experience (typically in 2D) that just don't exist anymore.

Say what you will about Mega Man 9, say, but NOBODY is making games like that any more for consoles. Not in any way, shape, or form. Retro games aren't just cashing in on nostalgia, in their best incarnations, but they're reviving a type of gameplay and experience that would otherwise not exist.

You can say you don't like those type of games, but that's not the same thing as the game being bad.

Not to be super-serious over this list, because for every MM9 there's a stupid Galaga remake that could have just been its own game for all it does with its namesake.

But when they shine, man, I feel like a kid sitting in front of his NES again.

I think the VGA should have been #1, but whatever.

The paper cover sleeves around games is 101% true... :(

Man, I HATE those cardboard boxes. They're not so bad on DVDs - chances are you won't be watching that particular movie more than a couple times in a year, if that often. But on a video game, it's way beyond annoying. Especially the Fable II CE box - but the thought of that debacle just makes me angry, so I'll leave it at that...

the online avatars are compleatly usless. i have no idea what hte fucking Miis do.
Jimmyjammy  - 10 months 3 days ago
Quick, let's turn this in to a Nickelback hate thread! For all the relevance that has...

But it doesn't matter they suck and I don't like them! YEAH!
camo510  - 10 months 3 days ago
Nickelback has 1 or 2 good songs but overall hes just a crappy overplayed artist
key0blade  - 10 months 3 days ago
The avatars, I agree with, what do the 360's Miis do?!
